I tested high in iron and don't have Lyme. No explanation can be found for my hair loss but that is listed as a symptom of FM.
"Just in case" I recomend a multi-vitamin daily....if you aren't already.
I'm low in zinc and iron (and D), have not taken my vitamins regularly, and have not had hair loss.
Another "just in case" - eat some yogurt daily. If you don't like it, perhaps adding some to a smoothie will make it taste better. It works better if you get plain and add stuff to it just before you eat it. My dad used to use jam. Honey and fruit is also good. This could help with the good bacteria lost during antibiotics.
A lot of people recomend kefir. It's like a yogurt drink. You can find it in some stores near the yogurt. I don't care for it, but it isn't horrible.
I hope some of this helps. It might be old news to you.
To help with the iron, have vitamin c with it to help your body absorb it. No need to take a c pill, just have an orange, or orange juice, or any citrus fruit or juice.
If I have C juice I save it for a treat when I eat an iron rich food.
High in iron foods: meat, especially red meat; sweet potatoes, spinach, molasses.
I switched to spinach (most of the time) for my salads. It takes 1 week to get used to. Now I like it better than any other lettuce. It also is good in omelette or in pasta.
A long time ago a midwife recomended baked sweet potatoes (like you bake a regular potato) with molasses (blackstrap) instead of butter. It sounded yucky....but I tried it. It's like eating candy. Just try a little corner if you are uncertain.
And if you're going to eat dessert....one with molasses is beneficial. Such as gingerbread cake, gingerbread cookies, any molasses type cookie.
At least it will give you some things to try while waiting for your thyroid results.
Just came off a year long period of thin hair from thyroid inbalances and from weight loss surgery. Biotin at 10,000 a day along with b12 and b1 are both important. You're already doing zinc and iron which are the others. You might add some vit C if you aren't taking it just because it helps zinc and iron absorb better. The thing I found that worked the best though - you'll laugh and raise your eyebrows but I swear it works - is using just a bit of monistat all over your scalp twice a week at night at bedtime. We have such yeast issues, and sensitive scalps that this helps kill off whatever nasties are living there. My hair literally grew 1.5 inches in one month. I have pics of my scalp before and after and there is a ton of new growth. My stylist was blown away. Oh, and after about 10 yrs of having such itching on my scalp that I would bleed in some places, that is gone. I use the generic, it's pretty cheap that way. Just letting you know what's working for me. Hope you find something that works for you.
Hair is protein so be sure you're getting enough and take a multi-B, not just the biotin.
I have been taking high dosage of probiotics for about 4 years now. I am taking vitamin C and B complex with the iron. I'm sure many of you are taking alot supplements, I have taken a ton in the past 4 years. Currently, I'm also taking B12, Vitamin E, Selenium, Vitamin D, Calcium and Lecithin. I went to a naturopath for years and am now seeing a homeopath (which isn't helping). I feel like a drug store :).
I spoke to my doctor about monistat and she asked if my scalp was itchy. I told her it wasn't and she said I don't need it. I heard coconut oil is good for your hair. Maybe I'll try that. Thanks again.
