Read the Bible every day. Get a modern version, read 3 chapters of the Old Testament, and 1 chapter daily of the New Testament, For the rest of your life. I have read the Bible 55 times from cover to cover in 41 years, and in several languages.

I would tell them to pray and talk to God daily, find a friendly church that believes the Bible and start attending,

God will help you grow to a mature Christian if you follow these disciplines!

Hereforyou - if you are talking about someone who has not believed yet who wants to know how to start a Christian journey, I would first of all tell the person how he connects with God is through Jesus which means accepting Jesus as his Savior. (Tell him that) After that the Holy Spirit who he has invited to come into his heart will lead him with the studying of God's words to learn who God is and what is His will. If he knows very little about the Bible I would advise him to learn through listening to sermons and Bible study that is explained by another believer. (pastor, Bible teacher, other believers). He needs to be around believers in order for his faith to grow.

So, unless he has already done so, the first step in the Christian journey will be "....... Declare (confess) with his mouth, "Jesus is Lord" and believe in his heart that God raised Him from the dead to pay for our sins."

Romans 10:9

"If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

When I accepted Jesus as my Savior, a Christian woman prayed with me to guide me to the process of asking Jesus and the Holy Spirit to come into my heart. She told me prior to that that the only way I could know God and have a relationship with Him is to go through Jesus (through accepting Him as my Savior).

The lady was not able to follow up with me since we lived in different towns, so she gave me a Bible and took me to a church in my town and asked a Christian man who was an assistant pastor of the church to follow up with me spiritually. Another Christian woman in the church joined him in doing that. They took very good care of me, were there for me when I needed. I attended church regularly and joined the church's weekly Bible study group and the cell group (home groups in members' homes). So, guidance from other believers is very important for a new believer's spiritual growth especial one who does not have a lot of knowdlege of the Bible and God. I hope what I said helps.

Hereforyou - If your church has Bible study, that will be a good place to hear to the Bible. At this point, I can't picture me reading the Bible cover to cover or more than one chapter at a time. Thank God for the internet. When I want to know what the Bible says on a certain topic or where it is in the Bible some verses are located, I type in afe words of the subject at google, and pretty much all the information I need is there. When I pray formally (as opposed to praying and doing something else or while lying down or first waking up) - when I do my quiet time, I always read the Bible after the prayer. God knows I can read only a small part at a time. It was different when I was younger.

Yes the internet makes things so simple and easy to look stuff up but there is nothing like opening up the good book!! I agree a Bible study would be great place to start to surround yourself with Godly people

Agree about opening up the good book. God gives gifts of preaching and teaching to certain people. They preach good sermons and good Bible lessons. The Holy Spirit gives them wisdom.

Thank you for sharing. Reading The Bible, Prayer, and Fellowship with Believers are all very important. It is also good to answer the personal question of what they Believe and why. Knowing Our Lord And Savior Jesus Christ Is God, and that He Died To Wash Away our sins Forever and Rose Again, as He Prepares Our Home. When we Believe, our sins are Washed Away, and we are vessels of The Holy Spirit, so we need never to walk in shame, as we are The Lord's, and Born Again. We are dead to sin, yet Live For The Lord. We Follow Him, because we love Him, because He Is Love, and first Loved us. The Way might not be easy, but we Have The Comforter, when it gets difficult. We are Saved By Grace, yet not by works, because many might do more, yet we are equally Saved, that Believe In Him, as that is Grace. Learning to cast away the shame of the world's view of success is difficult, but a very good thing, as the first will be last, and the last will be first. If we might fall, The Lord Is There To Pick us Up, and not turn away from us. Our shame turns us away from Him. We Are His, soo He doesn't turn from us, That Is His Grace. We can try hard, but we will Forever And Always NEED Him. To any new Believer, I would say, that you might fail, but you are Forgiven, so don't let shame turn you away from The Lord, Who hasn't turned away from you. You might suffer, but know that you have The Great Comforter. Seek Him with all your heart, and love others, as He Loves us. Shame is an imaginary veil, that our enemy uses to try to turn us from The Lord. If we stay humble, then shame is meaningless. We can fall down, but He Does Carry Us On. He Lifts us Up, and Is The Rock, that lets us stand, and He Carries us, even when we don't think we can carry on. Our Victory Is Already Won In The Lord. Now it is His Life, that we Live In Him. You can't start the disciplines without being saved. Very important. My assumption that the person was a Christian, was wrong. Because we should verify that, snd the best way to do that, is to explain why Jesus died for us, and how to confess him.

I would like to add also that when the tax collector prayed to God "God have mercy on me, a sinner," it was an expression of "humility."

The fact that he "would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast" indicated that he must be feeling ashamed. Being ashamed of oneself is the opposite of "being proud of himself." Shame does not necessarily lead to the person turning away from God but instead lead to him asking God for mercy. God will not say to a believer "Shame on you." He may say "Humble yourself."

Shame is different then Humility. Humility is knowing we aren't better then everyone else, but still worth Salvation. Shame is that we are not worth Salvation, because we are too far gone. Being Humble is the opposite of Pride. Shame is the opposite of Ego. Living with Depression, Shame is an everyday battle, because it is the feeling of worthlessness and not deserving to be loved. That is fought by knowing that The Lord Loves us and died for us to Give us Salvation. He Loves us, even when we feel ashamed or even hate ourselves. It does help with being Humble, as Humility is a big step up from Shame. Pride is thinking we can do it ourselves, while Ego is knowing all we need is ourselves. Humility is knowing we need Salvation. Shame is thinking that Salvation is beyond us. Fear Of God is loving Him soo much, that you never want to disappoint Him. It isn't that He will cast you into Hell at any moment, because you are worthless. He doesn't need us, as we need Him, but He wants us, and proved it on The Cross. We bow down before Him in all Humility, and Follow Him, never putting ourselves before Him. Hopefully that clarified about Shame. Thank you. God Bless.

RJW - Thank you for describing what humility and shame are. However, a question is "Do we as believers have to ask God for forgiveness when we sin?" My answer is Yes, we do..

James 5:16 says "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

What I believe it means is believers still sin (capable of sinning) as long as we are still living in our flesh. We should confess (admit our wrong) as opposed to thinking we don't have to. This article below talks about this subject.

There is no shame in confessing our sins to God or to another human being. It is as a matter of fact a decent (holy) thing to do. Sinning to others or to God and have no sense of guilt and shame or feeling a necessity of having to apologize is indecent. Human beings all teach their kids this moral. It is a universal moral (decency). If a person (believer or non believer) chooses to turn away from God rather than repenting from his sins so he can be forgiven and be right with God, then let him turn away. No sane preachers should tell any believers they are too far gone for salvation or for God's forgiveness. And no sane and moral preachers should tell believers they have been sin-proof. Preachers and Bible teachers who possess God's gifts of preaching and teaching can make sense of this subject. I don't claim to be one of them because I am not able to explain to everyone the correlation between the presence of sins and prayers (presence of unconfessed sins while a believer is praying). I believe as believers we should not be so ashamed of our sins that we think God will never listen to us; on the other hand, we should not think we have got some sort of amnesty from God for the penalty of sins.

The wages of sin is death, but The Gift Of God Is Eternal Life Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. That means the penalty of sins is death. If a drowning person is rescued from the water, then they aren't drowning anymore. This is why they must focus on The Walk out of the water, and not continuing to say they are drowning, as we can't drown on The Rock. Our biggest penalty now is disappointing One, Who Loves us beyond words. If we Believe In Him, we will Follow Him. He never turns from us, but we look from Him, when we are tempted in the flesh, as The Lord is in no evil thing. As we entertain temptation, we stumble and fall. For that failure and shame, we want to hide from God, like Adam and Eve tried to do. As they had to answer His Call, we to must still reach up and grab His Outstretched Arm And Hand. We do ask for Forgiveness for any failure, as we turn to look away from Him to do them. He Is Ever Constant, and if we seek Him, we will Find Him. It is then we who turn away from temptation. It is different with a nonBeliever, as The Lord does turn from their sin, because that sin is the Veil between God and them. They are still drowning in the water. However once they Believe In Him, and let Him pull them out of the water onto The Rock, then no Veil of sin. We still might stumble and fall, but He Is There To Lift us Up, as we try harder to please Him. A Believer will think disappointing The Lord is worse then death, but should never fear being separated from Him, as that is unimaginable agony. As far as asking God for forgiveness when we sin, the Bible's answer is - YES!

"If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" 1 John 1:9

This is a Bible verse everyone should memorize. Hide it in your heart. Refer to it when you sin. And do read 1 John 1, the first chapter. Actually, read all of 1 John! It is a simple but excellent book to learn and grow from.

(Simple in Greek! We read the first 2 chapters in 1st semester Greek. When I started reading the Bible in German, I started with 1 John, and it was also easy, meaning I didn't have to look up many words. John was not a scholar, he wrote plainly and simply! So his message is clear!)
