Hi. I have not been here for awhile. I have realized that my son and I are not really estranged, just going through his separation from home, trying to establish himself and my difficulty in letting go. It still hurts to just not feel needed, the separation of just not seeing or talking to him everyday. I really miss him. This is probably accentuated b/c my H and I just don't have much in common. Something we have to work on but it is hard. I have come here tonight because my husband and I leave tomorrow on our first vacation without our son. It is just breaking my heart because it just feels like another phase in the change of our family. I know he will be fine. It is me. Please pray for me because I just dread getting on that plane without him. My coworkers say that my is so much like me. Don't know if that makes this separation more difficult or not -- the vacation separation and the permanent separation of him not living in our home any more. Pray that I find some enjoyment in the trip and also that time passes quickly. Thanks.

Going through adult children moving out or getting married although normal is difficult. It does bring us to a new stage in life. We find ourselves there sooner than we would like.

I pray you and your DH have a wonderful trip. Try to be thankful for one another and the time you have together. God bless you both.

I couldn't say it any better than lindajoan did. While the estrangement from our son was so very difficult, it was an opportunity for my husband and I to grow closer, and that's the way it should be.

I hope your vacation, just the two of you, will be the beginning of many fun things you will find to share.

whymom......the empty nest syndrome. Norske is so right, enjoy your time together knowing that your part raising your son is complete and now he needs to make a life on his own. There are different seasons of life and all are an adjustment. Hope your vacation is a joyous time to get to know one another all over again. =)

Yes, I agree it doesn't really sound like estrangement that much as it does empty nest syndrome. I have both....I am estranged from son #2 and I have empty nest syndrome with son #4. So I do know what both feel like. But the very real difference is with my baby son, who is off at college and just being a normal kid spreading his wings, I know that we still have a normal relationship and I know that, even though he doesn't call me all the time, or go on vacations with us all the time, he still loves me and he will still come to see me and we can still have a normal relationship. I know that if I was sick, he would come, or if I died, he would come to my funeral. With my ES, I sadly cannot say any of those things. You sound like a very wise person in that you are trying to work on your relationship with your husband. I pray that this vacation is very restful and happy and that you and your husband reconnect with each other in a wonderful way. Blessings to you!
