The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?"
I said, "O Sovereign LORD, you alone know."
4 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!
we find these words in the 37th chapter of Ezekiel. but the question i put to the group tonite is based on the word prophesy.
what does it mean to you? and is it for the church today?

As years passed, the Jews who were scattered gradually moved back to their homeland. That graduality has been picking up the pace. Jews are moving from places such as Europe, especially from countries such as Germany and Poland--the area where the language of Yiddish is spoken, the United States and Canada, and even from such places as Ethiopia and Somalia.
Like individual bones coming together to form a skeleton, the scattered Jews are going back to their homeland of Israel.
think about that....do they mean the same? and maybe we can stir this up some more....do prophets exist today? the traditional belief is that there was no need for prophets once the Messiah arrived. so why does Paul say to the corinthians, "I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified." without getting another debate going over tongues, i'd like to point to Paul emhpasizing prophesying. is he implying something different than uttering prohecies?

As for speaking in tongues, I believe that gift is only given to some Christians. It's an ability that personally, the Lord has not granted me. Instead, he's granted me other strengths and gifts.
and you make an excellent point about equating the Bible as a true prophet, for the very word of God is prophetic; to utter it is prophesying.
i'll add a little more....
prophecies were defintely an OT thing. look at all the prophecies regarding Jesus. they were given in a time as a word of hope for time yet to come. they were accurate. the only prophecy given in the NT is regarding the end of time. we call it apocalyptic and it is the book of Revelation. prophecy is usually cloaked in symbolic language, full of types.
Matthew 26:68
and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"
Corinthians 13:9
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
here are only two examples of the usage of the word prophesy. the first usage implies that prophesy is a knowledge of something that is now, and with no regard to the future.
the second example is in the middle of Pauls famous soliquay, on love. by the way, he does not say that it will pass away.
so what does everyone else think?

I think it is just the 2 different forms of this word .
Paul teaches us that while all may prophesy, only some will recieve the gift of prophecy. it does not require a prophet to prophesy, however as a believer it is incumbent that we prophesy.
