I dont know about what you say..why did the earth become formless and empty...its strange to me, doesnt everything that exists have some form? I always pray when I read or talk about scripture..what does God want me to know??? so my prayer is God show me what you want me to see and understand.
I dont necessarily agree with this "But something happens during that long, long period of time between these two verses and it's NOT good. Why did the earth become formless and empty?"
I dont see that it matters much to me when satan fell or was cast out...I consider that he did as it is written in the word: but i did search and find some interesting things on this question...

each of these pages contain some really interesting reading precisly on this subject.
What all of this boils down to for me...satan is Gods enemy and mine. he is defeated allready...always knew he could never win but chose his pride over love for God...we see this at work in each of us every time we sin and we are helpless to change any of these things....what we couldnt do for ourselves God did for us...it is impossible for us to be good or holy or pure, we would all be dead in our sins and condemned apart from Gods grace...all good things come from God...there is nothing good in a man...unless of course God is in us...because we invite him in...because we can because he revealed himself to us, and took our guilt...made it possible for us to turn to him, and easy.
I enjoyed your question and this journey it sent me on, what i appreciated most is your choice to search Gods word and study it. I love
from philipians chapter 4
8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableâif anything is excellent or praiseworthyâthink about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in meâput it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
and from psalm one
1 Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.
and deuteronomy 6
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Thank you for your contribution here and for your love for god and his word, which is an encouragement to me and Gods spirit within me. May the peace of God gaurd your heart and mind in Christ jesus our lord
What do You mean by long long period of time between these two verses? Genesis 1:1-5 are the first day. As for the earth "becoming" formless and empty, they were "made" that way. God is laying down the laws in a systematic way, a way for Us to comprehend with our finite minds. Try to imagine earth and space at this time. No galaxies or stars, no sun or moon, nothing. Just a dark picture, until Gods spirit hovers over the waters and shines light into the darkness. Then He starts to set His physical laws (that God upholds to this day) in motion. We can only try to imagine.
As I've said before, the question on when Satan was thrown out of heaven is irrelevant. Here's a good question, what time is it in heaven? There is no answer to give. We are trying to grasp heavenly things, and that's impossible. Is it really important to know when he was thrown out? Or why he was thrown out?
This is in reply to both posts. I did not expect really an answer, but how and what you felt about that. There really is no close answer to that question because it's too deep for the human mind to comprehend. This was meant to be a discussion, that's all.
Like you all, I'm thankful first that the Lord had saved me and that I'm not going where Satan is going. The Lord is always in control.
The article above provides an excellent discussion on this which is known as the "GAP Theory". I found it provocative.
