Children Of Divorced Parents Support Group
This community is for the children of divorce, both for adult children who have lived through a divorce as well as parents concerned about the effects of divorce on their children. Share your story and get advice in this support group, where there are others going through similar challenges.
I'll start out by saying I'm a college student in my 20s, whose parents have been divorced since I was 5 years old. When I was 7 my dad moved 25 minutes away from my mom's house and my school. Their custody agreement went as follows: Monday- MOM, Tuesday- DAD, Wednesday- MOM, Thursday-DAD, Weekends-MOM or DAD.
I've never had a friend, or even an acquaintance, who grew up with the same 50-50 custody agreement, so I'd like to reach out on DailyStrength and see if anyone had a similar agreement, and how it affected you. I'm reaching the point in my life where I would like to let go of my anger and the instability this caused me, and move on.
I'll also mention, in my situation my parents cooperated very well, and didn't talk poorly of each other to me (until more recently). I had a step-dad, who I got along with, and a step-mom, who I've never really understood or liked. Also, my dad has depression but is very secretive about it and rarely sought professional help. That meant that going to his house, 25 minutes away, was that much more stressful.
Anyways, how have others coped with their parent's divorce? How can you forgive losing part of your childhood? And how do you think I could tell my parents how unhealthy I think this was, or should I even?
I stopped going to my dads more than once a week when I was about 15; but this was mostly because of our fighting, and the issue was never fully resolved.

I think your parents were trying to do what was best and didn't make things hard intentionally..
It just seems like noone has really made a manual for what to do when a family breaks up.
My mother told my father not to visit me and he complied, so i didnt even get to know him.. I dont really know what's worse - not knowing your father or having a crazy schedule like your visitations.
I think they were just trying to be there for you equally..

Forgiveness was found with God. Though it DOES NOT make it right, our parents are human, they had their own struggles and that is why they acted the way that they acted. Again it is not just, but it helps me to see with eyes of compassion. I am here to talk of you need to. I also have a poor relationship with my father and stopped going to his house around 16.
