17 is a difficult age to make any child do something they're adamant about not doing. Each state is different but I'm sure the majority believe that 17 is an age to where your son can decide on his own where he wants to live. As my lawyer put it to me when I was going through a battle over my-then-8-year-old (now almost 13): "You cannot physically pick up a [17] year old or grab him by the ear to make him leave your home." If your son refuses to get off the couch when your ex comes to get him, tell her just that - he's refusing to go with her.
I would definitely check the law for what state you live in and see what the law is on how old a child has to be to decide where they want to live.
Sorry if that was bit all over the place, I am a bit rusty. I hope everything works out for you and I wish the best for you and your son.
