It has been 6.5 weeks since my husband discovered my affair and 6 weeks since I last spoke with my AP, and contact and the relationship has been totally cut off . With the help of counseling and talking, my husband and I are making progress and healing, albeit slowly and with difficulty, especially for him. The trouble is that the affair was really integrated with my life and now so much of our everyday world is a possible trigger for him.
For years we had drafted a tentative plan to move a multiple states away to be closer to my family so I/we could help them, and to give me more time with our nuclear family due to a better work situation. I wonder if anyone has thoughts on making such a big change and commitment as a family choice, so near to the ending of an affair. So, my question is if anyone has any thoughts in general about making a big move so soon after an affair? Has anyone tried doing that and what was your experience? Is it too risky and did it ever amount to just feeling like you were just "running away"?
The obvious initial benefits: 1. we would set the stage for a healthier family life (following major upheaval of moving) with more time together (due to MUCH shorter commutes for BOTH of us) including time for me to make dinner and go to school events, better job position, lower cost of living, less stressful environment, opportunities to build community/healthy relationships TOGETHER where we live, we have been house hunting for years since we have outgrown our current house so we need to move somewhere anyway, etc. 2. we would eliminate the daily visual triggers of recollection for my husband 3. we would eliminate any chance of my husband or I bumping into my AP or his family and 4. I would be in a better situation to improve myself to get a better job and 5. my husband could find a new job, with no philosophical pressure, in any field since he would be starting fresh in a new market.
The obvious apparent cons: 1. too much hope placed in the change fixing a lot of things (and don't get me wrong, we are working really hard in many other ways and so far doing pretty well, but the ups and downs can be extreme...ok, mostly the downs are the most extreme). 2. my kids have to start over and even with positive benefits at new schools it would increase causes for their anxiety 3. my husband will be in a place where he is more vulnerable because he have to find a new job and the uncertainty with that, loss of proximity to his family (some benefits to having space from them actually, for reasons explored in counseling for both of us, and he agrees with that as much as he would miss the support they offer him by just being near by), the area is new to him, etc. 4. We would lose our newly developed counseling relationships.
To be clear, this would be us finalizing and executing a long standing plan to go to a specific city for a specific reason, so it isn't completely unplanned or totally spontaneous and reactionary, but jumping to put it in action now would be dramatic, and honestly, reactionary...as it would be/have been dramatic and a big change under any circumstance, it isn now just complicated more by having a deep, volatile emotional impetus driving us to action.... On the surface, it has the potential to put us in a much better, fresh starting position for success. Anyone make a decision like this before and have any thoughts or advice?
Thanks.
After three years the triggers occur less and affect me less so may want to take that into account as well. Right now everything is a trigger and it brings him very down but the shock of finding out is still fairly recent. You can gauge how he is doing in a few months and figure out if locational triggers will be a big issue in his ability to stay with you or heal.
A major move isn't always necessary anyways. If you slept with your neighbor or someone at work less drastic changes like moving to the other side of town or changing jobs.
Another thing is to change routines in general to remove any reminders of the relationship before finding out. Shop at different places, eat at different restaurants, remove wedding pictures that have been hung up etc.

Even though your husband didn't tell you to switch jobs it would be wise to start looking for a new one in the meantime.
