So I have probably spent about an hour looking at postings and have come to feel like this is a place where I can safely talk about what is going on.
It seems like many people who have cheated feel like their situation is different. I guess I fall into that same trap. I'll give some details of my emotional affair so you all can tell me I am full it and we can go from there.
So I grew up with an image of what a marriage should be like. A friendship first but a relationship that would be passionate and very close. I completed college before I dated because I didn't want to be distracted from my education goals, like my parents had, and be able to provide. When I completed school I already knew who I was going to pursue. A high school friend that I always had a connection with. I had actually know her since Jr. High and we already knew each other well. We dated and before long were married.
I had a very hellish first year and the only reason we didn't separate was for religious reasons. Out of self preservation we seemed to find some pathetic equilibrium. We both wanted a family and had 3 beautiful and talented children. I guess I should say that I have been married for 23 years and am 46.
We settled into this pattern where she would stuff things inside and blow up every few weeks and would throw up a wall. I would climb the wall or break through it after a couple of days and we would be good again for a while. This cycle continued until I was resigned to the fact that this was my life.
So fast forward.... I am an Ayn Rand fan. Anyone that knows Atlas Shrugged you will get me pretty quickly. I met and became good friends with a younger woman that was brilliant and a very hard worker. I was an advocate of this individual and watched her grow with the company and become a leader. She eventually left the company and that's when things got interesting. About 5 months after she left she send me an email telling me how I made an impact in her life and how she looked up to me.. Nope, nothing yet... (wait for it)
She had an opportunity to travel and we would chat a couple of times a week over IM. She got herself into a precarious position and I became VERY worried about her and it was then that my concern as a friend crossed an emotional line. (Hindsight here people.) Once the line was crossed we began to talk more and become closer. After a couple of months of getting to know each other I fell for her. (Mind you I had known her for over 5 years and knew her pretty well and was a big fan.)
I guess the best way to put it was that when I got her email I replied with 'If I was younger, wasn't married and was better looking and had more $ I would have pursued you." Yea, just reading my own words I get what an idiot I am.
BTW, I had tried several times to improve my marriage. Book after book, counseling etc. So I was resigned to a mediocre life. It was this wonderful woman that woke me up to the fact that I didn't have to have a shitty love life until the end of my days. No matter what happens I will thank her for that.
So enter the drama. I didn't believe my marriage was something that could be saved. Why? Because i tried for years to turn it around (see above). I still have two kids at home and didn't want to up and desert the family for this other woman. So in all my selfishness and twisted logic I thought I would go to counseling long enought for my wife to give up on us. Well to my surprise she fought for our marriage!
You should know that my wife has a habit of handing small things very poorly. (Leave a cup on the wrong side of the counter and you get an ear full.) But she handles big things very well. So when she knew I was fed up she grew a halo. The nagging stopped, the mothering stopped etc. I didn't believe it was real at first because of our past. It March of this year when we started counseling. By the end of May I had to give my wife credit for her effort and decided (intellectually) that her effort deserved an effort on my part. I was worried that when I did the other shoe would drop and things would get bad again but she deserved the effort.
So I turned the corner and touched her for the first time since the middle of February. I met with the Other Woman and broker her heart. My wife and I had a great couple of weeks before the other shoe dropped as I feared. (Not like I expected there to be no consequence for my actions.)
So I knew I we had work to do if we were going to fix our marriage. I deserved whatever wrath I had coming. I was determined to give my marriage every chance. What I didn't expect was how messed up I would be for hurting the Other Woman. This kills me to this day and impacts everything. I also am discouraged by the lack of progress in dealing with the marriage issues. We have been consistently going to counseling and if feels like the marriage had returned to the cold and distant 'friend' relationship I had for 23 years.
Anyway, as many have said there are lots of details but you are probably already tired of reading.
The point is I wasn't looking for an affair. Was surprised when it happened. It happened with someone I had know for 6+ years so the qualities I see in her are much more than infatuation. (Infatuation is certainly a factor here, but what I see in her may be more founded that what others are attracted to that actually seek out an affair.)
So, I must admit that my situation reads a little different from the stories I have read in this forum so far. But I have only been poking around for a short time so correct me if I am wrong.
Anyway, this is my story and I'm not sure what the weeks ahead hold in store...
I look forward to your input.

Also a Rand fan (Gawd, I wonder how many of us are?...).
I'm left with one question: What do you REALLY want?
Anyway, from my youth I have believed I am capable of a long term passionate relationship with the woman I love. After 23 years and the efforts I have made I am loosing hope that I can have that with my wife. We have had good times but the constant negativity and pettiness is a passion killer. She even drives the kids nuts with it but I'm sure that's not uncommon. (My mother drove me nuts too which i why I moved out when I was 18.)
I knew the OW for so long and really knew her well and admired her for her mind and her kindness well before I fell for her. She has the qualities that need to be there for the kind of relationship that I believe we are all looking for. I'm sure there are skeletons and there will be issues with anyone but she is really a remarkable woman.
A little more background.... While we had an intense emotional affair we never talked dirty. She really didn't want to be the other woman and limited her involvement with me. She made it clear that if my marriage didn't work out then she was interested and limited how open she would be and wouldn't even share her feelings completely. There was never a chance for the affair to become physical because she wouldn't allow it. After I fell in love with her I wonder if I would have had the ability to abstain. I really must credit her for it not turning into a physical affair.
Other than texting we would meet between every 1 and 3 weeks for about an hour and a half to talk.
After I broke it off she was hostile (understandably) but forgave and things became civil again. (We work together so that made the work days easier.)
I doubt there is a chance that we can be together after I decided to work on my marriage. (Perhaps in vain)
I guess at this point I feel like I am headed for some years alone in a one room apartment.
What do I want? The impossible. A life with the Other Woman without kicking my kids in the teeth. And even though my relationship with my wife is bad I still consider her a good friend and want her to be happy in the end.
I wish you well. Keep us posted
If I bought into her philosophy completely I would have left my wife as soon as I found someone I liked better.
Have you read Atlas Shrugged?
I'll spare you my full story here (if you want it: http://www.dailystrength.org/groups/cheatersanonymous/discussions/messages/20693287))
One thing I'll say about how I got to where I did was regret over not having more relationship "experience." I dated one woman for 2 years, she dumped me, then I met my wife. That's it for me. Not that it's some kind of game where we need to keep score, but I do feel (at least to a degree) that maybe I WASN'T ready to settle down. Did I really know what I want? Or was I just jumping at the first opportunity?
This doesn't excuse my behavior toward my W...she still deserved more decency than I showed. But I think the big, fundamental question for me (and maybe for you): Do I really see myself with this person?
From what you wrote, it appears your W was your first and only relationship in life. She very well could be perfect for you. But you owe it to yourself (and her) to really dig into that question above. If you're content with the fact that she's your one and only, great! But if you feel anxious, feel that you want more, it's much better to be honest with that fact than to lie and cheat.
Best of luck going forward
ImNoAngel - Well it certainly has gotten worse. I'm not looking for the first excuse to jump ship or anything but it can't continue long like this.
My wife tends to handle little things very poorly but handles big things well. He handled D Day well and actually convinced me to give the marriage a chance. Now that we are in the day to day grind the wrath is coming out over lots of little things.
I know what you mean about W exploding and not being able to keep it together over the "little things" but some how showing a different (stronger) side when something big is at stake. My W is a lot like that. It is as thought they want to push you away to a point but then have their own panic when they are faced with succeeding. Not sure where that comes from but it is hard on the other person because you are being pushed and pulled and no quiet sure where you stand. Hang in there. You might want to read about Borderline Personalities (not saying that your W or mine has it, but it has helped me understand some things).
This doesn't excuse my behavior and my W is obviously and rightly dealing with a lot of emotions. However if the borderline thing is true then I'll have a better idea of what I'm dealing with and may help me as I struggle to work things out.
Lately I have just felt defeated or as the British like to say 'I have lost the will to live'. No I'm not suicidal but that sense of defeat is pretty rough. Looking into my 11 year old daughters eyes every day helps me realize I am fighting for more than just my marriage. So I'll continue this fight.
Custos: exOM had a very similar experience when trying to passive aggressively leave his marriage - for me, which I now laugh about - - and it was only 6 months ago that we were planning our escape into the sunset. To his surprise, his apathetic W of 17+ years all of a sudden gave a shit! Imagine that. Luckily he's a little better at acceptance than the rest of us and seems to have happily and effortlessly absorbed back into his M. No harm, no foul.. I guess. But now I'm just whining. Back to the point..
You're at the start of a journey we've all been through or are currently navigating. You have to decide what it is you want, truly want, and go from there. Then you have to trust the process and MOST IMPORTANTLY, trust time. Everything takes time. It's excruciating, laughable at times and ultimately rewarding to walk down this path of self-discovery. You will soon realize once clarity abounds that it really doesn't have much to do with this magical, wonderful exOW and almost everything to do with YOU.
Good luck! This is a good place to be. Go easy on yourself and take the criticism as seriously as you take the support - it's equally as valuable. Makes a few friends and read our journals. Journal yourself. Buckle up - it's only just begun! :)
When you look up Borderline Personality, also look up Codependent personalities. Codependents are the type of people that end up in relationships with borderlines. Also look up Histrionic -my exOW was a perfect example of that one :(
Anyway I really appreciate the support and advice.
BTW, went to the counselor tonight and it was the third meeting in a row where my wife got hostile. I don't think I'll be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel any time soon.
Oh, unless I pull the rip cord and bail out of this thing. Trying to be patient though.....
