Hello,
I started dating my wife six years ago, and we just recently married in March. I have been feeling a lot of scared feelings the past few years; mostly having to do with turning 30 and feeling extremely nervous about living up to the expectations of adulthood. This year started off wonderful, with my promotion at work, and the wedding. Then once we got married I started to feel very depressed, almost like cold feet. People told me that the dynamic would change, and even though it was just a little bit, I could tell.
My wife and I have a lot of mutual friends so it is no big deal when I say that I hung out alone with one of her friends a few weeks ago. But afterwards things felt different. I could not stop thinking about her, would look at her pictures on Facebook. But I dismissed it as a silly crush and that it was something that would fade. We hung out a few more times and I started to realize that it seemed the crush was mutual.
So, last weekend my wife was away at a conference. I decided to confront our friend about what was going on and basically just acknowledge the problem. We met up, I told her what I had to say, and she admitted that she too had a crush on me. We said we would move on, never speak of it, and that was that. After I got home I was alone all weekend, since my wife was away. I found myself pining for this woman sexually and all the while, missing my wife and wishing she was there. That Saturday night I talked to our friend on the phone for 2 hours, until 1am. Nothing sexual, just talking more about our feelings, still determined to move on.
Fast forward to Sunday afternoon...I wanted to go to the bar to watch the World Cup Game. My friend invited me to come to her house, and I told her that I would only come if we both promised that nothing would happen. I went over and we watched the game with her roommate. After the game was over, she invited me into her room to hang out and give her roommate some privacy. I knew this was a bad idea, but I cannot explain how emotionally lost I was ...it all seemed like a foggy dream, like I still in college and meeting girls for the first time.
I ended up having sex with her, and I took a cab home at 2am. The moment I got home and was alone to consider what I had done, a dark gloom poured over me. I immediately felt regret, shame, embarrassment, and fear that my single mistake could ruin all the work I had done to create a wonderful relationship with my wife. I told this woman I needed space, I blocked her on GChat and Facebook. She tells me she wants us to be friends, but at this time I cannot be around her and do not wish to text her. I cannot stop thinking about the sex I had with her, but I am not stupid enough to think that these feelings are worth more than the love I have for my wife.
It is four days later and I have not told my wife. immediately on Monday morning I made an appointment with a therapist. I wrote my wife a letter about all the personal problems I have been facing and how I am now making the changes I have been needing to make for a long time. She is very scared, and keeps asking me why suddenly now? I do not know what to say to her. I feel like I need to keep this one night stand a secret; at least until I prove to her that I am doing positive things to help myself. The guilt and shame I feel has caused me to stop eating, and I have basically become dysfunctional at work. I know that humans are not perfect, and that everyone makes mistakes. But I just need to know whether the guilt and shame ever fade away, and whether it is possible for a marriage to survive something as awful as what I have done.

What worries me is that it happened so soon after you got married. Somebody must have told you terrible things about marriage and hence the getting depressed part?
Usually I am in a do-tell camp. I might say don't tell if it was totally out of the blue one night stand.
However your circumstances are really set against you.
First of all - your wife knows this woman. And she was quite active in seducing you which as far as I am concerned increases the chances that she will want your wife to find out.....
Second - the roommate.... You have a witness who has probably no reason to keep her mouth shut to her friends. The world is a small place....
Having said that - if you tell your wife now, it will be bad but can be recovered from. What almost every Betrayed Spouse (BS) will tell you is that lies were way worse than the act of cheating itself. So if you come out clean to her your marriage has a chance.
If she finds out from somebody else - it's going to be much much much worse and much harder for her to recover and to ever trust you again, also since humiliation of knowing that the woman who slept with her husband was around her all the time with likely many people knowing. So not only she was betrayed by you, but also but other people.
If you decide to tell (if you do - kudos to you for courage) read the book "How to help your spouse healing from your affair. A compact manual for the unfaithful" by Linda McDonald. It saves marriages.
Good luck.
That combined with all the wonderful attention this woman was giving me. Telling me how I deserve to be happy, telling me I was sexy and attractive and actually asking me how I felt about things. Yes, my wife and I just got married, but we've been living together for 5 years. Not much has changed other than some documents and a ring on my finger. It does feel different.
In terms of the roommate, I understand the risk. She claims that the roommate did not figure it out. I am not sure what to think.
I am really suspicious of this whole thing, because she invited you over (lured?) and you took the bait. It wasn't a spontaneous, in the same place at the same time kind of thing. Women that betray their friends like that usually find a way to make it known, so that's what I'm worried about for you.
Your wife will be devastated to hear that your one night stand was with a friend of hers.
I think the fact that you got yourself right into a therapist is a great start. And that you've sought out advice from this group---they are great! I am new here myself and everyone is so supportive.
Hopefully the therapist can make some recommendations as far as telling your wife, because this is going to be very tricky, since her friend was involved. That amps it up quite a bit.
I wish my H could have protected me that way. I think he intended to, but the OP contacted me because she was angry.
In the end, if you do have to confess because of external circumstances...that's the time to be completely honest and forthcoming. It's not the time for trickle truths because you think that it will lesson the blow.
Try to take this stressful energy and redirect it toward your wife in ways that demonstrate your love and admiration for her. I think that may help improve the way you feel about your core self.
Come here for additional support. It's a safe place to talk about your feelings and get some great advice.
Always remember that no one is perfect. Situations like this happen more than we want to realize or accept. Learn from this---is my best advice.
Take care!
I am having a difficult time not talking to the OW. She wants to continue to be friends but to "put her in a box" mentally. But I know this will not end well if I do not cut things off. Thank you again.
I have heard BS's talk about that. Before they found out about the A, they knew something was off and it was making them crazy. Most in that situation are glad they found out because at least they could put a name to what was going on. At least they could face it head on knowing exactly what it is they are dealing with. Kind of like finally getting a diagnosis to a bunch of random symptoms. Even if the diagnosis is bad, it is a relief to at least take the mystery out of it. At least you can finally face it head on knowing what it is.
As you go through dealing with the fallout for yourself, and it will take a long time, (kudo's to you for going to counseling) be aware of your W and how she is handling what she doesn't know and what she is picking up on. Sometimes telling is better. It's not simple is it? so many factors to consider. As you go through this process, I believe at some point it will become clear to you if it is better to tell, just stay open minded about it.
I was give an ultimatum and was told to choose her or OW. I deleted her from facebook, phone contacts, gmail, etc. She will figure it out and contact me for sure.
Of course she told you to choose. Do and be damn consequent! If you choose your wife there is no room of any kind for OW. Ideally call her with your wife present, tell her you love your wife, you regret that you ever got involved with her and don't want her to ever contact you again. If you try to protect OW it is going to hurt your marriage. Unless of course you would rather be with OW. Or just want out. In which case don't prolong it. Make a clean cut no matter which way you wanna go.
If you want to try to rebuild your marriage - get the book I mentioned earlier asap. Let it be your guide as it is a good one.
Take care - good luck to both of you.
Definitely get that book on helping your spouse heal from your affair. That's your main focus now and a lot of that is done by her seeing you working on yourself. My H told me a number of times that his healing was in direct proportion to mine so the more I worked / work on myself, the faster and better he heals. I have a few links that may help you.
Check out the articles hear, especially healing steps for the BS and CS articles.

This is my H and I's web site called Healing Infidelity. We wrote a book, which you will see there, but check out his blog's because there are a lot of blogs there that you and your W will both find very helpful.

Like me, you've got one shot at this, so give it 100%. That will help your W a lot to see that.
