Before I ask,I want to share good news: I went to Sunday school and church this morning for the first time in a long time. The church is the Disciples of Christ. The thing I really like about them is their focus on communion,which they have every Sunday. The reason I like it is because it gives us time to seriously consider our sins and shortcomings,and seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ's sacrifice.
Now,the question: my oldest sister,who I am closest to and love very much,took communion with me at a church we were visiting. She said later that she only went down (they served it at the altar) because the man sitting next to her more or less "pushed" her into it. But she was not (and still is not) born again.It seems that ever since that communion service,she and her husband have suffered from numerous health problems. Do you think she was taking communion "in an unworthy manner" and brought judgment on herself and hubby?

16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
Matthew 26 (KJV)

Mark 14

Luke 22

I think the important thing is "do this in remembrance of me.”
I have heard of "religions" that partake of the Lord's supper every time they meet. I feel that, like many other "retuals", this is not what is emphasized here. What is emphasized is that when it is done, we (as Christians) should "remember" WHY it is important. It represents the body and blood of Jesus. We are to exmine ourselves before partaking. We are taking, within ourselves, representation of Jesus. I believe the admonishment is more towrd Christians (true Christians). But, it seems to include those who are not of the BODY of Christ.
If it is done at every service, for some, it becomes a ritual. Something that MUST be done. They forget the TRUE reason it NEEDS to be done!!!
Paul admonished the church at Corinth. It would seem some where partaking of the Lord's supper with the wrong ttitude. (They were eting supper for norishment) So, the admonition seems t be directed more towards Christians.
1 Corinthians 11:20-34New International Version (NIV)
20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter!
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.
33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.
And when I come I will give further directions.
Please, don't give ANYONE a reason to blaime God!!! They must learn to take resposibility for their own actions!! Even if they allowed someone, or, something else to influence them. They mde the choice.
I must appologize for sounding so harsh. But, I feel we must stand for what we believe. Especially when it comes to our believes. If not now, then when???
We should take responsibility for our own action. I am quite feed up with this attitude!!!
The Bible is soooo full of "do's" that if we concentrated on the "do's" we wouldn't have to worry about the "don't's"
