Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cervix. Worldwide, it is the second most common cancer of women. It may present with vaginal bleeding but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in advanced stages, which has made cervical cancer the focus of intense screening efforts utilizing the Pap smear. I am 13 years free of the disease, diagnosed at 30, now 43 but I struggle at times with the fact that I was never able to have children due to chemo and internal/external radiation depleting everything in and around my cervix. I have been to several support groups were it was older women who have had kids and or younger moms prior to diagnosis. It seems there is such a small pool of us who never had the opportunity to have children due to the quick diagnosis and even quicker surgery giving you no time to think about your future, just life at the moment. I feel like because of the cancer has really stiffened my future, my mental health at times and the most of all being physical. Anyone out there in the same boat?

I am only 34 but I too have had a hysterectomy and never had the chance to have children. Fortunately I do have a step son who is 21 . It is difficult at times knowing I will never truly be a mom.

I was suddenly diagnosed with stage IBI cervical cancer in June (Despite never missing a pap or biopsy or follow up). I am newly married and wanting to have kids and was planning for fertility-sparing surgery. I went in for my preop visit about 2.5-3 weeks after the diagnosis (After imaging and pelvic lymph node biopsy which was benign and seeing fertility specialists), and my cancer had grown from 3 to 6 centimeters! I was no longer a candidate for the surgery, or any surgery. I had to start chemo-radiation right away. I didn't have two weeks for an egg retrieval cycle because my cancer was growing so quickly. I am 32 years old and no kids. So my gyn onc did an ovarian transposition and moved my ovaries out of the pelvic radiation field, but that's not a guarantee. It has a 50% failure rate. I completed treatment one month ago. I'm having hot flashes. I don't know if this is temporary from the chemo or if this is permanent because the ovarian transposition didn't save my ovaries from the radiation. I do know that one of my ovaries was partly in the radiation field. I did what I had to do to save my life, but I hate that I will never be able to get pregnant. If things go well, we can do an egg retrieval, freeze embryos and use a surrogate in the future. I won't even know if I have any viable eggs until about a year from now. The fertility doctor wants to wait a year to let my ovaries recover from chemo. I hate not knowing. I've always wanted children. I know things will work out one way or another, but I'm just frustrated and disappointed about it.

I'm 35 and completed chemo/radiation about 16 months ago for a stage 3 tumor. There's not one day that goes by that I don't think about the loss of the opportunity of being a mother. Every one of my friends has young children and it's a constant reminder that I don't. I'm also sad and disappointed about the situation and find it difficult to talk to friends about, mostly because they all have their own children and I'm sure don't know what to say to me. I just keep reminding myself that it could have been worse...it actually was worse last year when every moment of the day I was sick and driving to radiation and/or chemo. I'm physically feeling great now and hopeful that maybe one day soon we'll be able to foster, or adopt..or even one day be ok if neither happens.

I'm 32 and newly married just found out last week that I have stage IB cervical adenocarcinoma. We were supposed to start this month to get pregnant and I got the OK from my gynecologist. He said he saw what was a benign cyst and sent it to pathology only to find out it was adenocarcinoma. I had another biopsy last week I'm waiting for my results. Hoping I can spare my eggs for long enough to be able to freeze them before what is likely to come, hysterectomy.
