I would guess that she's already worried... so I wouldn't think that you wanting to talk about things would make it any worse for her. If she says that she doesn't want to talk about it at all then maybe leave it but I'm sure she could use a good friend to be there for her. Support by helping with meals and kid pick up, etc would probably be a big help when she's going through treatments, as she likely won't have any extra energy. She's a young (and I'm sure strong) woman, I'm sure she'll make it through just fine! It's a long few months but by next year she should be starting to feel normal again. Movies, easy walks, etc may help to keep both your minds off of it it the meantime :)

I second Blessed143's advice. You can always just tell her; "If you want to talk about it, I'm here to listen. And if you want to not have to talk about it, I'm happy to support you that way too. Just let me know what you need."

I also agree that the old standby "Call me if you need anything" doesn't work very well - people don't like to ask - but a solid offer such as, "I know (Johnny) needs to be at school at 7:30 every day, would it help if I drove him for the next six weeks while you're in treatment?" Or "If I come by and dropped off a few frozen meals, would that be helpful?" or anything else that is specific and you think might be welcome.

And from those of us who have had to rely on people around us after a diagnosis, thanks for being such a caring friend.
