Cerebral palsy or CP is the most common childhood physical disability. It is a permanent physical condition that affects movement. Growing up with CP wasn't easy. It was hard being teased by my siblings. I got annoyed when my dad introduced me to people by saying 'This is my daughter, but she can't walk'. He didn't neet to apologize to no one for my disability. A few days ago I got fed up with the lack of support I receive from my family. I got upset and told my mom how I felt. She ask why was I behaving that way and that other people with disabilities don't behave that way. No offense, but how many people with disabilities does she know? Only me. It's frusttrating to feel so misunderstood.

I totally understand how your feeling. I always got teased by my older brother and cousins because of the way I walk. I have broke down a few times because I am the only one in our family that has disabilities. I feel so alone sometimes and even now nobody I know deals with the day in and out pain and struggles I face everyday. Until I turned 19 my CP really didn't bother me. I woke up one day and couldn't walk and my back was hurting so bad. My back has been hurting non stop since then and it has gotten worse. My doctor says I don't have arthritis so I don't know if all this pain is normal.

It's sad, you would think our families would be more understanding. Maybe your back pain is cause by the way you walk. In occasion, my back hurts too. My doctor said it's probably because of the way I walk. I guess I put too much strain on it.

Well I also have Scoliosis so that's a lot of my pain. But yea I'm sure a lot of my pain is because of the way I walk. If I walk with my heels down my legs hurt so either way I feel like I'm losing :( I get so frustrated because nobody that I know has any idea of the hell I'm going through.

I too had no support growing up so you're really not alone. Hopefully you'll make yourself stronger so that you won't take in or be affected by what your mom or your family say. Your mom probably feels guilty that you have CP, but she will never say. All we want is an I'm sorry, or an I understand, but that's not going to happen. Hope you're feeling stronger soon. I'm here if you want to message me.

i am just reading your post. So sorry for the reactions of your family members. I would do anything to support a family member with a disability and to build their self-esteem and positive qualities. What is wrong with people. Sorry, just upset me to read this..... know you are in the right place to receive support. Take Care, Dana

Thank you for your kind words. You are right Booky63. A simple 'I understand' will make us feel better. Right now I am upset with my family for not including me in family pictures. I got fed up last family reunion and told them in their face how I felt. I have wrote about it here. I am waiting for an apology from them. I know It will not happen, but I can only wish. I am so glad I found this website. You people are so nice.

Pisses me off when people feel the need to explain you to other people. Like, I have this chair in my house, it looks good, bot one leg doesn't reach the floor and it rocks when you sit in it. I'm the chair that looks good to sit in, but yet has to be explained as the one chair that can't be sat in. does that make sense?
ma1mar4
Yea, totally get what you saying cf0531. There's no need to explain to people our disabilities. We are who we are.

i can relate to your post, my son has cp and his uncle pulled my sons shirt up so he couldn't see, bad balance, i was so pissed, people just don't think! the stares at stores when people looked and stared at him walking really burns me to. he's had botox shots in his legs, dorsal rhisotomy, heel chords sosas muscles lengthed hamstrings lengthed duel ostiotomy on thighs, and will have ankle turned soon, it is frustrating for him and also as a parent frustrating as well , we try to keep are heads up,

Family will never understand what we go through. It's easy for them to judge.
