Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...

I was finally diagnosed with CD 4 yrs ago, then 2 yrs ago developed the same reactivity towards corn. My diet and life style are strictly managed. Most of the time this works well, but I have noticed that January-March are really hard on me and I have a difficult time staying well. This has been true at least for the last 3 yrs. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

You might want to ask your doctor to check your vitamin d levels. Since I've been supplementing with vitamin d, the winter months are not as hard on me.

Thanks, Nanny1611, I'll check into it. I know that my potassium levels are off at the moment. Still searching for the source of gluten or corn that is contaminating my food.

Glad you're going to have your vitamin d levels checked, especially since you already know that your potassium is off. Another thing to have checked might be vitamin b-12. I have to supplement both vitamins--d and b-12. BTW, I make almost everything from scratch, because so many things have hidden sources of gluten. Pinterest has been a great source of new recipes for me. Best wishes to you.

Just an idea - I've found myself reacting to the main sources of starch as well - like rice, corn, gf bread and pasta, gf baking, gf crackers and pizza, potatoes... tend to get bloated and tired and sore tummy. Maybe try minimizing those? I have felt lots better not eating them, and just having meat eggs fish dairy fruit veges and nuts.

I noticed that a few years ago and realized in the wintertime, I tend to make alot of soups/stews with beans and veggies that can be hard on the intestines. If you have "d" troubles more, your potassium levels will drop. I've had the same problem. If you can tolerate them, try pedialyte freezer pops. Take care.

Thanks for the comments. I'm trying to do the elimination diet thing, but so far nothing has shown up and I can't eliminate all foods until I feel better. My labs showed that I'm low on vitamin D and protien. Both are just indications that my gut is not absorbing nutrients correctly. I'm going to see a GI specialist in early April.

You may be experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder. (Seasonal depression due to lack of sun exposure/vit D). Too much info to give here, so you may want to Google/Bing that and see if the symptoms match what you are experiencing. Be sure to bring it up with your doctor.

There maybe a little of the SAD going on, but I don't see intestinal swelling, nausea, adominal pain, or joint pain on the symptoms list. What I'm experiencing most are my "classic" CD symptoms. The vitamin D suppliments don't seem to be having much of an inpact at the moment. I'll keep trying to eliminate foods from my diet until I feel better. Thank you for the suggestion. It may not sound like I appreciated it, but I do.
