Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...
I suspect very strongly that leaky gut is responsible for this. I went undiagnosed for a long time, and I\'m sure that my intestine was damaged by all the years of eating gluten.
I\'m hoping that this will begin to resolve, and that one day I\'ll be able to go back to a gluten free diet that includes at least some of these other foods.
I would be interested in opinions--including the doctors\'--on the leaky gut idea, and also if 2 years is a realistic healing time, given my age of diagnosis (49). Thanks!
Since going gluten free, even a little taste of gluten gives me a immediate sore throat and D, so I have to be very diligent about it or I lose days being sick from it. Dairy and soy cause similar problems too. If not Lyme, I suspect it is from such long-standing illness (I am 45) and need longer to heal. btw-staying gluten free is easier when you do have such severe symptoms--some people don\'t have such severe symptoms and are still getting damage and imho, that would be harder to stay gf and heal.
Patti\'s last question is mine also.
My chiro is convinced after treating me for 10 years and my changing intollerances to foods after being gf for 16 months and now soy, dairy and maybe tapioca (?) so she\'s putting me on a suppliment she\'s totally researched and gf this coming friday. will keep you posted. doing the blot test for lymes but she suspects since i\'ve had 4 bites with bulls eye and 4 rounds of doxy, that i now have the secondary illness\'s that go with lymes.
would like dr imput also if you have the time.
