Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...

Anyone here have major dental problems and what did you do? My situation; very late diagnosis but too young to lose all my teeth but I will soon if I don't find a a lot of money and a very good empathetic dentist. Trying to decide what to do where to go. Full dentures or save what I can or?

Sorry to hear that you might lose your teeth, peachdahlia. I've had dental issues since the age of 3. My mom never let me have candy or soda pop, and she made me brush my teeth as soon as I was finished eating (healthy meals), but I always had cavities. Then a few years ago, I came across an article that claimed certain nutrient deficiencies can be at the root of soft teeth. I knew I was Vitamin D deficient, but also found out I was magnesium deficient. Since supplementing with calcium, magnesium, vitamins D & K, I haven't had so many dental cavity problems. Don't know if it was coincidence or the supplementation, but I'm glad I no longer "live in a dental chair." I only have 21 teeth left out of the 32 that adults should have--all the front teeth, but only 5 molars (4 of which are crowns). The dentist wanted to do several more crowns, but I couldn't afford it. He kept telling me that I wouldn't be able to chew, but I manage. Your decision is an individual one. Just think things through and make the best decision for you. And if you live near a dental clinic, check them out for better prices. Best wishes.

Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate it. I had great teeth. My first cavity was not until I was 19. But the enamel slowly eroded away which leaves no protection for your teeth. I understand about the nutrient deficiencies. In my case caused from Celiac Disease. I take supplements but that does not repair the damage that is already done. A clinic can't do the kind of reconstructive work I would need done. Also I need to get the courage up to go to a specialist to determine what can be saved if money were no object & my other options and go from there. Though if I go the full dentures route which I am leaning towards because of money, a clinic would make sense. My molars are in so so shape but it is getting harder to chew. I avoid hard foods like chips & apples. I think my biggest concern is not being able to chew foods with dentures. And of course the vanity of not having teeth. Sorry you had to be tied to a Dentist chair for so long. I hate going to the dentist now. It is so much more enjoyable when the news is always good. I used to love it. Anyone else with Celiac Disease going through this?

Don't know if I have CD, but I am definitely gluten intolerant. I won't go back on gluten for the 4-6 weeks in order for them to test for CD. It's not worth it, because I already know gluten is like a poison to me.

I was diagnosed 4 yrs ago but I suspect I've had it for a long time. I'm 36 and had tons of dental issues. I've lost 3 molars in the past 5 months and I will be having 18 fillings soon and need a crown (can't afford.) I live in North TX and there is a Baylor dental school where I will get a much cheaper rate. Students work on you and supervised by Dentist. It takes patience but when you're broke, it's been the way to go. Might want to check out dental schools in your area.
