Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...
I am not a huge fan of eating out, especially in the beginning. There are a lot of additives in processed foods that can cause reactions in your healing body. That said, as a general rule, check for places that offer a gluten free menu. If they go to the trouble of printing a menu then your chances are pretty good that they "get" the gluten free issue. I always say that I have a "food allergy". We know it isn't an allergy but establishment seem to understand the word "allergy"!
