In the evening after I get home from work, I take my cats (Mama & Son) for a walk - yeah, like some people walk their dogs, but without a leash. I jangle my keys and they follow me.
We go once around the castle and go back home. One the other side of the castle is this little bridge over a stream to the watermill, and the Mama Kitty, Mohrle was sitting on the outside of the iron fence in the middle of the bridge. She was dangerously close to the edge - but I know cats can balance well.
But suddenly she decided she wanted to jump from the middle of the bridge on the outside of the railing to the side wall of the stream channel under the bridge made of sandstone.
She jumped and missed, and PLONK! She fell into the flowing stream! I nearly had a heart attack because she disappeared like a stone. To top it off she is black! But a moment later the little head re-appeared and she swam upstream against the flow to climb up the bank.
Man was that a scare! I thought I would have to jump in the stream to save her! I didn't know that cats could swim so well.
Here is a picture of my cats in the castle gardens:
Sorry you had a scare like that but cats can swim very well if they want to. Since she's black you might want to put a reflector collar or one with one of those blinkers on it so you can see where she is in the dark. Even though Zenobia is black and white when we go walking at night she has a big reflector tag on her harness so she can be seen.
Zenobia has gotten herself into her share of trouble even though she walks on a leash! They'll get into all KINDS of things. Once walking INSIDE our apartment building she decided to jump between the rails from one stair case to the other. Didn't work that well, she crashed, but she wasn't hurt doing it. This time. Seems to have learned her lesson though.
I think that is amazing that your cats go for walks with you. I took mine out on a harness for a while.
I have just got back in from sitting on the door step with T - I do it each morning and evening now to try to get her used to going out.........it is a great way to get to know my neighbours too :)
