Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. We all hear about reducing stress. Going for a walk seems to be the easiest
solution and always recommended by my DR.
I see many out and about taking a break. Elderly with use of cane, walker, wheel chair. Whatever, the people are out doing something.
"Making" myself do this seems impossible. Because I am in the habit of Not going out and away from the daily stress, unless going to working or having an obligation to accomplish.
I broke the ice yesterday and on foot took Moms mail to the post office. About a half mile away. So, got the recommended mile in and did not measure the time it took. That is how I am going to start this new thing.
The YMCA teaches an 18 minute mile by walk/jog (For a cardio.)
I will get to this but decided the preparation must come from a simple step to this path. Otherwise, I am not going to do it! I admit this and clutch to all my habits good and bad. I think this is false sense of stability. Caring for Mom is only the icing on the cake. Eventually, I hope to see her out of the house a few days a week and when weather to hot maybe a trip to the mall to shopping for this and that to add movement. I can always do my thing away from her.
For anyone who read this far: My DR said "leave the house for 10 minutes then turn around and go home." In a few weeks make it 15 then 30 minutes"
I never did it. Could not find the time (LOL)
Today I am leaving to go run an errand on foot. Mom has mail a few days per week. My errand can always be "whose garden has what flowers."

In my opinion we often use our parents as the excuse for not doing things. When really it is our own fear of the new or unknown. There can also be the fear that they might not need us.
Why do we shoot ourselves in the foot like that!
I'll wager there are VERY few of us on this board that could not leave the house for a ten minute refreshing walk outside without the sky falling while we were gone.
Yet another way to assert! Take that walk every morning and if the parent whines or acts out just say you will help them when you get back.
You have inspired me to start a new thread about it.......... Right after I get back from my morning walk!
