Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
Diet and exercise are the most important treatments for type 2; well, along with some medications.
I'm used to working with Type 1 with my grandson which is a whole other ball of wax.
I'm going to do some research on this and see what I can dig up. If nothing else; maybe I can forward you a website or discussion forum on the subject.
I don't know what to say about the tricor. My doctor wanted me to take that but I've waited. I did niacin as part of Atkins a few years ago and it helped with weight loss and change the blood sugar numbers. Again maybe ask the doctor about the side effect.
Homeopathic methods, on the other hand, get my ire up. When you grind through the math on 24X or 12C solutions you realize that you are actually using nothing more than inert substances (typically water) that contain ABSOLUTELY NO active ingredients. They can have a placebo effect at best, and at worst they prevent people from seeking treatments that actually have a medical component.
No dramatic weight loss but it seems to help with belly fat a bit
Im 4'11' and weigh about 123. Would LOVE to get down to 110....but SOOOO hard to lose!!!!
Still have no idea if I should go for the niacin therapy. My new DR practices sports med and general care claiming the prescribed niacin is not the same release to metabolism as over counter niacin types. Also, it is not as hard on liver. (as hard...yikes)
My Dad did the over the counter and walked an hour every morning. Mom said it did little good. It was the carb counting that packed its punch with him.
Have set 6-17 as my time to make up my mind. Until then, will go to
see Tom Petty Live in concert tomorrow :)
P
(he he he, get it, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!)
Perhaps allowing her to have some control back will help her more than anything now in her golden years.
I'd let her try and see.
Anyone obsessed about any health condition is NOT a good thing. If she relaxes because of her choice, perhaps that is helpful.
YOU:
I would stop the Tricor. I would be very worried about my liver. However, the liver is very forgiving. It can recover and even grow back in some cases. Mine had totally stopped working from starvation before being diagnosed with Celiac.
I MEAN totally stopped!!! Not just slow or anything like that.
Once my intestines starting healing, the liver rebounded and recovered.
It seems to me that getting those pounds off would be best.
Now for my prejudiced OPINIONS!!!
I weigh 115 lbs right now from a medical problem. Doctor ran blood tests and wants me to start one of these cholesterol lowering meds. My total is 125. BUT, the "bad" is slightly higher than the "good".
I might worry once the medical problem is fixed. But while something else is "off", I am letting my body recover with as little intervention as possible.
I believe doctors have gotten over worried about small things and forget the big picture.
This is mathematical advice.
The studies showing that high cholesterol and high Triglycerides have come from researching patients who have had heart attacks and other heart related issues.
There are no studies (that I am aware of) that look general population long term to see if having those two numbers be high will cause a higher incidence of heart problems.
Basically, this means we looked at the ill and extrapolated to the healthy to ASS-U-ME that they got sick because of something they found in those already sick. We have no evidence that everyone who has high numbers will eventually get sick with the same ills. But we are TREATING everyone like it is a given.
The pharmacy companies jumped on the research already in place from heart patients, developed meds and PUSHED them hard to doctors ignoring liver damage and other issues.
The choice OF COURSE, is YOURS!
And your situation is unique to YOU!
I don't know about diabetes!!!
I don't know the risks!
I can only offer my opinions based on my life experiences.
You must feel free to totally ignore what I think if it seems wrong to you.
I just see so many healthy people taking these meds to get their "numbers down". It scares me!!!
Remember when anti-biotics were the rage and now we have resistant strains of bugs.
Rather get my butt out the door and walking than anything else.
That new habit is going to be the toughest to keep going. It just is.
