Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
These days we tend to stay away from politics or other controversial topics mainly became mom just can't keep her thoughts straight for that long. When something does come up I quickly change the subject. Unfortunately this leads to very boring conversations.
My one thought is to do some introspection to see if you are trying to find your "old mom" by having these discussions. When my mom was having trouble with conversations I remember being desperate to have those old talks. I quickly realized that it was upsetting mom and I was being selfish to try to force her to do something she wasn't capable of doing.
We all have navigated this path with our parents. Sometimes the baggage from our youth is too much (it was for my mom and her dad, she refused to talk politics with him). My dad and I tend to limit our political discussions to areas we agree. That works for us.
I think that the entire "P&R" area is an insignificant part of the relationship we have going with our parents and that we need to back off of it if it impacts our ability to care for our parents.
I think no matter what the conversation topic is, if both parties are in obvious disagreement, then you should find something neutral to talk about.
I would say that yes, you are lucky that your mother is "lucid" enough to still carry on conversations.
For such a strong woman, it is scary how she could get manipulated...makes me wonder about anything she could get swayed on.
