Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Mom has been insisting she is being forced to take her pains meds, even though she does not want them and has the right to refuse them. Every time she makes this claim I talk to the staff. They say there are times she said no so they abide by that. And they say there are times she has been agreeable. Mom has a track record of being manipulative and twisting the truth. But I do want to give her the benefit of a doubt. I am not sure how to proceed.
The med she is on is morphine. She claims she has severe pain in her hips. She was on Percocet but complained she could not swallow it. They tried crushing it for her and putting it in Apple sauce, but she claims it makes her gag. So the doc prescribed liquid morphine. She sounds very out of it when on the morphine and she claims it makes her hallucinate.
Yeah....I use the word "claims" a lot. Lol. She has claimed a lot of things over the years that turned out not to be true.....but I know I have to look into every claim or I just would not feel right.

We hope that where they are is keeping an eye on her and or keeping track of her meds.
As far as the hallucinations......I guess that may be one of the side effects as grammy states. As long as she is not hurting herself or getting sick with the liquid morphine.....I guess it will be ok? IDK.
Hang in there.....and vent or ask questions to help yourself navigate taking care of your mom :)
One more option, if you trust the staff then you can choose to go with the flow and not worry about it. (I know that sounds callous, but with your mother's history of manipulation, the position of not caring relieves you of the problem of sorting out the truth from a long distance point of view.)

I spoke to the facility and the doctor this morning. The order was for morphine 3 times a day, but was changed to as needed., to give mom more of a feeling of control by allowing her to decide when she wants it. Hope this works. Ok, who wants to make a bet that the next issue is mom complaining she can't stand the pain she is in? :P
