I can understand your worry about your mom not eating much.
What does your mom say? Does she want to eat more but can't or is she at the stage where she is closing down?
I hope that your mom can give you an answer.

my mom does ensure with ice cream in it when she doesn't have an appetite....so that was my best suggestion. sorry.
and some anti depressants make you lose your appetite.
is she drinking any liquids? water? there are clear ensures now.

Her internal organs may be shutting down to the point where she can't handle much food any more. It's hard to watch this happen but it's kind of normal as a person ages.

Cinben, I am so sorry for you and your mom. Both of my parents 87 and 89 don't eat much at all and some days don't even drink much. They say nothing tastes anymore. They lose taste buds as they get older. But there may be other reasons too, like her body just can't handle it anymore. I wait and ususally they get hungry and start to eat a little bit again. They never each much, but mom does with sweets. It is amazing to me how little they can eat and drink and they go on and on. Be patient. She may just be going through a cycle. Loss of appetite in the elderly is pretty common. The less exercise they get, the less their bodies require calories. Any changes in appetite should be run by the doctor's office just to ensure there are no underlying physical problems that's causing the issue.

Marinol for the most part is used to treat nausea and vomiting and some eating disorders. The risks of taking this med in the elderly wouldn't outweigh the benefits.

Ensure supplement drinks are good because it does give them some nutrition but in the end, when the body no longer requires nutrition, it won't utilize nutrients the way it should.

It is heartbreaking to watch them decline especially when it comes to eating and drinking. I'm sorry to hear that she and your family are going through this.

My mother lost the desire to eat; it was painful to watch. Especially since I LOVE to eat. It is very hard for me to watch this happen.

Have a long talk with her doctor about it, be open to what ever is said as some of it may be hard to take.

Try not to be sad about it. It is a natural progression in most old folks, and please don't nag her to eat. That just brings tension between you. Let her do as she pleases and enjoy her company while you can.

I know there is something that the doctors can give to increase appetite but for the life of me, I don't remember what the name is. Will she at least drink a boost or an insure? They have all the protein and vitamins she would need if she can drink at least 2 a day. I wish I was more help. Hugs GB

Cinben, my mom is 92 and won't eat, they tell me the Resource stuff they give her is sustaining her, and I bring her bananas and snacks like cookies and fruit. She eats 3 bites of food and says she can't eat any more. It does hurt.
I always bring her her favorite foods, so at least the few bites she does eat are good.

Just let them do what they want. It's all good
