As some of you know, I'm in the process of getting a Nursing Home set up, for my Mom.
Ok, here is the scoop on the Long Term Health Care insurance.
If you have Long Term HC, you must use that FIRST, before even applying for Medicaid. So, if you make too much money, to qualify for Medicaid, you have to pay whatever the Long Term insurance does NOT cover.
Mom is unable to qualify due to her income, for Medicaid. And, if you have Long Term Health Care, the Nursing Homes take that benefit first.
Once you have exhausted your long term daily payment from your LTC policy, then you would go about applying for Medicaid.
And, social services in our County, told me today, that is you have more than the allotted amount, and have a living trust, etc..and. money in your accounts, that it is a long, drawn out process, and you have to get a lot of the patients paperwork, bank statements, tax returns, living trust information, and basically all of the financially information that the person has, to submit. Then it is a very scrupulous process of them seeing if you even qualify.
So, Mom has 1.5 years of coverage, and we have been talking about how much money out of pocket this will cost us, for her to have Long Term Skilled Nursing Care, after the Long Term Care insurance pays for the room. It came down to , that she will have $300 bucks left per month, after her Social Security and other income, to survive on.
that's it in a nutshell....It sucks big time.....but that's the bare facts!

Boo, I know what you are going through is so difficult. My heart aches for you.

She is stubborn but the paranoia is also in the mix. All I want her to do is have automatic bill pay and she thinks the bank will F it up. Of course, she writes her checks and can track that most of the time. It is just slower is all. I go in and check when she is not looking. She does not understand the Durable Power of atty and that I can actual do these things and make changes. She thinks she has to be flat and incapacitated for the POA to "work." I once asked if the POA police had to come to her bed side and pinch her to be certain.
Another time, I told her the POA paperwork meant nothing except now I was registered as Pony of America. She has a sense of humor at least.
I can not get through about "what if you have a stroke and need long term care? She thinks she will just be loafing on the couch. Wouldn't it be nice if it were so simple.
My gosh you have chased down a lot of facts. So sorry you have to go through this.

Tomorrow i will spend time on the phone, calling more Nursing Homes, to see if ANY have a bed/room free!!!
Seems like there's 'NO ROOM AT THE INN".....for now.
Watching mindless TV now, and not worrying anymore about it tonight!

I rec'd a call today from the Assisted Living home, that said mom didn't meet the guidelines last week, because she was a fall risk. Now they are saying, they can have her re-evaluated by August 15th.
That's great, and fine and dandy. BUT...the cost of the room is reasonable, and her LTC will cover all of it, and still have some left over to stash for later.
The problem is, she mentioned that the "Care Plan" services that they offer, are kind of like 'a la carte"...>So, the room charge she gave me, but the other stuff they charge individually for, will have to be figured out, after they see what kind of care she may need.
I'm assuming the "extra care services" include her meals, etc...
SO, it's another waiting game, but i'm going to continue to look for Nursing homes, that are all inclusive with all of your care, and also Assisted Living Homes, to find out if they all do this "a la carte" bs.....
Kind of wish I didn't have to do this alone, but my gf has been helping me, by looking up phone numbers, and listening to me bitch, when I hit a dead end, or get frustrated. I'm hoping to see her this weekend, and that will perk me up, and put a smile on my face.
Good thing? My cat Jackson, is a great listener, and he can put a smile on my face in a matter of seconds. He's very sweet, and attentive,and he doesn't talk back!!!!

Went to Walmart today, bought myself some earrings, a few cheap shirts on sale, and a few things for my upcoming surgery, and just chilled out.

So, before surgery...I've been trying to shed about 15 pounds, and once i do that, we can schedule my surgery.
I've been preparing for this, almost a year now, so i'm very excited, and ready to do this. Wish i could just wiggle my nose, and those last 15 will be gone!! LOL!
