My mother has a habit of tapping the counter or table top with her nails and it absolutely drives me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the clotting factor has to do with whatever medication she is taking that could interfere with clotting. Keep the gauze in her mouth for as long as you can. It keeps the food particles out. The last thing you want is an infection.
All she's doing by poking at the site is aggravating it. I'd tell her to stop OR, you could sedate her. OMG, I could get arrested for that statement.
