Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Last evening I took Mom to a prompt care because her urine was the color of cranberry juice. They have the lab and are part of a hospital so she was ok going there.
The nurse told mom she had a UTI and that it must hurt. Mom said no. We all said No???
Mom said to several people that it didnt hurt to pee just her hands hurt.
I said nothing because it pays to let others speak so you can hear responses other than the usual at home variety.
The DR asked if her belly hurt or lower areas during urination. She said no. Just my hands. At that time she held her hands together and squeezed. Her knuckles were white and she was actually wringing her hands like a wet towel.
I said no wonder they hurt Mom you are squeezing them.
She looked so innocent and frail sitting there trying to cope with her pain and no one caught on.
It makes me wonder how many more things I have missed because I didn't give her time to explain. Or notice her body language for clues to some of our issues. I have got to learn how to change the way I listen to her. Anyone have advice??
BTW...It does hurt her and we are also having DR look at her kidneys since the urine was so red and came on suddenly.

For advice, I would just recommend getting your hands around what medical conditions she has, what medications she has and what side effects those meds may have. Go with her to the doctor's office for any visits so that you can talk/hear from the doctor personally. That way, your mother can never "fib" to you or over simplify what the doctor has told her. Then, I would just do what your doing now, in conversation; directly ask her pointed questions. If you don't like what you hear, get the doctor involved.

Too much sugar and kidneys is what I was thinking, I will have her go back again to be sure of the infection is gone.
How is it things get by us when we are so involved.
