This is a difficult one.

Is your mother getting any form of social security? Are there provisions in it to allow for money to modify your house? More money might make the problem easier to solve.

A stair lift could make it easier for your mother to get upstairs, but those can cost quite a bit.

When we were planning to move mom home the plan was to take the dining room and make it her new bedroom. It had doors at one end so that was good. The other end opened up into another room, so we were going to get one of those poles that has springs in it and use it as a curtain rod.

You can get bedside commodes (google "bedside commode") I found references for products that cost less than $50 and one for just under $25. You can have a small table with a water pitcher and small basin to use for hand washing, or even use hand sanitizer.

Talk to a PT or OT and ask them about products you can use. My wife is a discharge planner, and there are resources in the community that can provide these products. Depending on your mom's insurance you may have more or fewer options at your disposal.

How high is the mattress and box spring? Those can be more easily moved than an entire bed, shoved down stairs. As far as the bathroom, you can go old school -- the chamber pot route. Ew, but it is an option. She can brush her teeth and do other grooming rituals at the kitchen sink. These are just practical solutions. I just wish I lived closer to you to actually help in a physical standpoint.

I don't know if anyone would have ideas on how to rearrange a two story house into a one level.. Are you living in your mother's home or is she living in yours? If she's living in yours then you have about one option, it's either an addition or you just make do on the first floor. You could also do what Pepper has suggested and look into the chair lifts. They're huge, and cumbersome in my opinion but it's a choice. If her physical capabilities are going to keep her tied to the first floor going forward, then you'll probably have to look at other living arrangements for her if your home doesn't accommodate her needs.

Do you think your mom can get herself on and off a bedside commode?

Have you called hospice yet? It costs nothing to get a consultation and even if Mom is not quite ready for them yet they are a fountain of good information.

My parents were both on Hospice care when they passed.

Medicare paid for everything. Hospital bed. Walker. Adult diapers and BSC.gloves and butt wiping pads.
