My mother decided she wanted to make her own funeral plans, which had me surprised because for years she has been telling us she is afraid of dying. I could not let her do that by herself so I left work early and sat with her and the funeral director. Mom shed no tears.....I bawled like a baby. This is hard.

Mom is taking control of her final departure....and I think that is healthy. it is also a gift to you....you will have all the plans made out ahead of time.My stepfather had chosen music and psalms and what church etc. there is so much other crap to deal with, it made everything so much easier. IMO, it is a very good thing. No one says we have to use the plans any time soon.....I have my plans in place as well, and was just thinking today that I need to write my obituary...(step father did that as well....and did all that for my mom too....)

It is, of course, terribly sad....but beautiful too.

I agree with BV. It is good to know your Mom's wishes ahead of time.

Much better to know in advance than to have to figure it out when you are in fresh grief. And perhaps the planning process is helping your Mom with her fear of death? Hope so!

I agree, work with your mother. She may have bridges she wishes to mend, funerals may be 'too little too late' but at least this gives her the chance.
