Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
First things first.
Are you and your siblings all on the same page as far as what to do for your parents? That is critical because it lets you all be part of it, and if there are any emergency decisions that need to be made you have a platform from which to make them.
Who has power of attorney for health care over your parents? Get this resolved ASAP if none of you has it.
Do any of you have power of attorney over financial matters? Likewise, resolve it. This will let that person pay bills and take care of important issues should your parents not be able to do so.
Is money an issue? Even if it is not, getting one of you (all of you?) on a checking account will also help.
Now to the transplant list. Talk to your dad's doctor; hopefully you or one of your siblings is able to do this. The doctor may say that waiting to the 19th is not a big deal, or he may say that it is a big deal and anything that can be done to get him in a hospital faster is worth the effort.
I am so sorry that all this has sprung up on you guys. It is hard, I know. Keep posting here, share what is going on. And don't be afraid to post similar things in other groups. It sounds like you have friends here in other groups, and getting support from friends is very important.
Gentle hugs
I will try to talk to my dad's oncologist, that's a good idea.
We once tried to formulate a list about what was most important, and quickly realized that the most important thing is different for each of us! But that being said, I think that talking to our siblings is in my opinion the most important thing.
My MIL has tried to pit sibling against sibling to her advantage.
For example, after she moved in with us she told different stories about life with us to different children. But they (my wife and her siblings) talked to each other and knew what was going on. She later told me that she wanted me to pack her up and drive her back to her house (about 3 hour drive away). I told her that she needed to talk to her children, that I was not involved in her decision to move in with us.
Sorry to make this more about me. You guys have a huge step up on others by being on the same page already!
