Hi all, I have been on overload since a Blizzard dumped a foot on us.
My brother came to see Mom that day too. A 10 hour car trip. He was in town 4 days and saw her 6 hours total!! Why did he come? What an extreme thing to risk the bad weather. Perhaps he is in denial about Mom.During his visit he had the nerve to say he was surprised she has lasted as long as she has. Ah!!!????
We did have some of my family of choice visit before my brother. I made sure we did before the storm and the brother so we could have a less exhaustive time. I mean this for me. Pacing is key to this care giver thing.
Mom and I were so worn out with the blizzard and people coming by that we elected to skip a formal Christmas dinner. We ate a sandwich and watched TV. She is miffed about my brother. Thinks he is controlling of his wife. Also questioned why he came by and that they were here to see the near by tourism town.
Mom now watching TV and has not complained much about him. That is a change for the good. Losing short term recall has a silver lining. LOL

As for me, my relatives no longer visit much. They expected us use up all our vacation time and money paying for them to tour. When we refused to pay for their tickets, they went home early. Really! Some family expect visits to relatives to be totally free.
It seems like travel during summer months would be more sensible for more reasons than the weather.
Oh well.
Yoiu can't do much about mom's concern about your brother. Hopeflly, the dementia will continue to work in your favor and mom will have none of the troubling effects that can happen beyond these.
Too bad about your brother's callous behavior. But at least he got a dose of reality about what is happening.
Dont blame you for skipping the hassle of a big dinner for some boob tube and a sammie instead!
