When my mom lived with us, she couldn't remember what she did five minutes ago for the most part. And after a few years she couldn't even remember long-ago events. As you know, their whole personality dies slowly.
But have you ever experienced what I called the "changeling"?
We were never absolutely sure that Mom had Alzheimer's, because she had suffered a series of mini strokes and kept having them throughout. One day she had a mini stroke, and when she woke up she was NORMAL!!!
It was the most precious thing we'd experienced. My husband grabbed the video camera and we recorded her as she chatted away about all kinds of things, including short-term memory events. It would only last a few hours, then she would fall asleep and wake up as an Alzheimer's patient again.
The changeling thing happened several times, and each time it was as if God gave her back to us to remember why we loved her so much.
