Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
Not sure what mom expects from you.
If she is competing with you, I'd say that is not good for her. We each have dietary needs of our own to maintain.
If I had 20 lbs to lose, I'd do it on my own without telling my father. We do have rights to privacy!
One way that is popular in the US is Atkins. His program claims that by eliminating all carbs for three days tells your body to burn fat. Then you slowly add carbs back in. Problem is the diet pushes protein as a major food source which can be hard on some organs.
30-40 grams of carbs can leave you with a very healthy diet if done right. Seems like having mom eating with you would be a help for you and a nice way to work together. I'd say go for it.
Cutting out most of your usual carbs is the way to go,,, although it's difficult for all of us,, cuz carbs are FUN.. ha! As for me,, i could use to do what you are doing as im up to your weight myself and i cannot believe i allowed myself to get this way! As for your mom,, at her age she needs all the calories she can get,, unless of course her weight is a problem.. I know my mom's is! She weighs 185 and that's way too much for a woman who is 5'2" tall! That weight makes getting up and around way more difficult! Talk about leadbottom! ;) anyway... hang in there and good luck in your endeavor to lose,,, you have inspired me too!
again,, wish you luck.....
I do try to keep my life to myself as much as possible. However Mom catches on. She becomes upset that I am secretive. Not all of her days are mixed with confusion. She will have those moments, recognize it, and push herself back to being lucid. Not sure how she really controls this or if it is all one cycle. She is just early into ALZ now.
Her DR is going to send a diet plan. Things written down seem to hold more clout with her.
( I have the diabetic and cholesterol plan for me. It goes with the meds and blood work. Just have to tweak carbs though my intake is less than 40 % . PS It was explained that an enzyme from pancreas breaks down triglycerides. I take meds to help this but may have to increase if diet does not help in 90 days. )
Lack of exercise is so common. I let mine fall away from a good healthy amount to the activity from work. Even the dogs suffer.
What is it about caring for someone that takes our eye off the essentials to live and care for self? I do not want to tell a DR this...I am sure there is a diet and pill for this too!! LOL
I will join a class at Y though. Love the aerobics in pool
