I started out in the caregivers group and vented my heart out. Being a caregiver is the hardest job in the world. The group was very active when I first started but I noticed the activities have slowed down. The group helped me so much just knowing I wasnt going crazy. The things I was feeling and experiencing was normal. I have met some really great people here and Id like to stay in touch.
Unfortunately, Ive had to move to the Widows and Widowers group. This is where Im learning a whole new experience and items that you as caregivers need to really look at. Everyone thinks their affairs are in place but now is the time to verify.
1. Car, trailers and equipment make sure they are registered to both of you and not just in one name. look at the title and make sure it is in or.
2. Will make sure you have a will and discuss what your spouse wants in case of death.
3. House- If your not on the loan, make plans now to refinance and have you put on the loan. Just because you are on the title doesnt mean the lender will accept payments and they will start foreclosure. Think about it you lose your spouse and now your home.
4. Make sure all the kids and step kids know that you are the spouse and when your other half passes it will not be a free for all. Everything will be yours and yours alone. After you die it is theirs.

A few things I have learned ....if your spouse has any bank accounts in only their name and you have POA transfer the money and close them while they are still alive. If you don't want to do that you can name a TOD beneficiary (transfer on death) Probate can be a real pain and $$$. Also, with regard to hospice, you don't have to go with the one the doctor prescribes. Do research and find reviews. Some are non profit and some are for profit which doesn't actually always make one better than the other. If you don't like your hospice team call a new one ... They will be happy to step in and they will handle letting the other group know.
Also be careful w life insurance companies. Sometimes they will change your policy from whole life to term if they get wind your loved one is sick.
