For the last two days my wife, who is still at the nursing home, has been in some kind of foggy state. She was telling me about a dream that she thought was real. Her voice is shaky and she whispers and is incoherent. Her blood sugar has been spiking and they gave her meds for it. I talked to the NP, because nurses like to question my motives, yesterday about what I thought was happening. I told her that the last time this happened she had a UTI. In fact every time this happened she had a UTI. She said she'd test her for one. Margaret, my wife, is incontinent. It takes them a long to come and change her. I understand they are busy, there are about 30 patients on that unit with only two aides, but I fear she will develop bed sores. I also talked to the OT guy and he asked me what I thought about why she can stand and sit 20 times one day and then not be able to three the next. The only answer I have is that she's depressed and that she has a UTI. I can tell she's not feeling well when she didn't ask me ten times to take her home. I don't know when she will come home or if she will. I take it one day at a time. I do know she's not coming home today.
I have been volunteering for about a month. I had to take some time off due to my knee, calf and ankle swelling from surgery. I took on too much too soon. I also have infection in my knee. I have been compelled to "take it easy" which isn't easy for me. But I must take care of my knee to avoid further damage. My children have been helping a little bit, which I appreciate. I have been having days where I just feel defeated. Having her there one would think it would be easy on me, but its not. I visit her everyday and help her as much as possible, since the aides are too busy. I'm in the process of building a wheelchair ramp so that she can come home. But I wonder if I should because she's not any stronger than when she went in. I cry a lot but not in front of her. I am doing things for myself as much as possible.

I can feel your pain and frustration. I was there and medical people didn't want to listen to me either. Could your wife be put on a catheter to help with the problem. I know during my husbands time, I was changing the pads and bedding myself because the medical people were not around. Finally they put him on a catheter and it made all the difference in the world. Hugs Arlene

Thanks Arlene. No they won't cath her without a dr.s order. We see the urologist on the 24th of May, I will ask for a cath order. This nursing home has a bad reputation in this area, its the worst. Mention its name to anyone and they groan and will tell you stories of the lack of care there. Unfortunately it is the only one that would accept her. Today I was with Margaret and she needed changing, I told one aide she looked disgusted and said "I'm not her aide". I asked another aide if she worked there and on that unit and she said, "I work the other side". I said, "I don't want to talk to you then". I went to my wife's room and rang the bell and set a stopwatch..it took them 6:53 minutes to come to her room, not to mention the 5 minutes after I told the first aide. I am really sorrowful and ashamed that my wife needs care and she lacks it. She was sent there because I couldn't do it and now that she has 24 hour "nursing" care she lacks it even more. I can't sign her out because then the insurance won't pay. They already sent me a bill for $22,000 which I have to make $650 payments on each month. I'm really sad.....

i will pray for you. I went through many things like you are too. Insurance wasn't going to pay because the hospital hired a doctor outside the plan. It got so bad I asked my sister to come live with me for 2 months and be my eyes at the hospital. What a help. I couldn't have done this alone. We took turns and my husband was watched almost 24/7. Other patience were screaming for help. I'd go down the hallway and all i heard were yells for help. So very sad. I will be there some day unless the Lord has mercy on me and takes me quick. What was even sadder was other patience was asking me or my sister for help and we couldn't take on that responsibility all we do is tell them we would get the nurse, and of course the nurse never showed up. He had to be in that hospital for 21 long long days. My heart goes out to you. Make sure you tell your wife how sorry you can't change things and that you love her. hugs Arlene
