Caregivers Support Group
A voluntary caregiver is a spouse, relative, friend or neighbor of a disabled person or child who assists with activities of daily living and assists those unable to fully take care of themselves. we don't get if we don't ask.
and if there is a social worker at the hospital, perhaps they would know...or a council on aging....there are resources...I don;t know about NZ tho.
Most of the people around us just don't get it. There are a few who really try, and they are precious to us. Taking care of someone as intensively as we do very quickly weeds out the real friends from the rest. Only a real friend will stick around.
Here in South Africa I haven't heard of any respite care, but I will ask around. Good idea.
I have started seeing a counselling psychologist who says I should take up colouring in and tell the negative voices who say I am not doing enough to shut up. She is actually quite good and deals with a couple of patients who are struggling with chronic pain so she knows a bit about what I am dealing with. She also has quite a sense of humour - says I need a holiday !
Basically I need to try and create the rest a holiday would provide in between caregiver duties, running a household and homeschooling an aspie son while fighting off my own fibro aches.
Must be a way - others have dealt with the same or worse:-)
