Career Changes Support Group
This community is dedicated to the difficult challenges of transitioning from one career or job to a new one. Especially as we grow older, it can be very difficult to acquire the skills and relationships and take the financial risk to make the switch.
It's frustrating to know your friends all have great jobs and you don't
Looking for something different is hard to get done. Especially due to lack or experience. Also find something else that pays good is difficult.
I only have one semester to go and already finding that no doctors offices want to give me a chance to work for them. Unfortunately, my college doesn't offer externships for Medical Office students (which I think is odd and ridiculous). I'm completely stressed and frustrated because I have clerical experience however doctors and hospitals just won't give me a chance even though I went to school to learn the work. Not sure what to do now and feel like I've wasted money taking out loans to go to school.
Left social work when my husband was transferred. I took on temporary assignments for a year; one of the firms offered me a sales job (custom manufacturing). The timing was right, the money was very good, and the work was interesting/challenging. However, this career path demanded 60 hours per week and travel; not particularly family friendly. Like many other industries, lots of changes over the last 15 years (technology, downsizing, corporate buyouts) that made job security a thing of the past.....it was particularly frustrating to have my work world regularly turned upside down to make the penny difference for the earnings report!
I stopped out of the corporate world when my husband was transferred and we had boys at home in HS that we felt needed an adult presence.....I realized that I would not be a good FT stay at home mom and started taking prerequisite classes at the community college - interested in an MBA or nursing. Found out that I really liked the math and science -- and I was good at it. Finally settled on a new career in OT and got in. Just 2 more years and I will be done!
It is interesting that for the first time, my OT classes, consist of people who are similar to me - have another degree, changing careers for a host of reasons, and middle aged. I am hoping that this new field will give me 20 years of meaningful employment, with a skill that helps others.
The financial squeeze (2 of in college, 1 salary) and the professional isolation were tough on me. On the whole, I was very satisfied with my classes at the community college, the culture for adults was a tough adjustment for me (I'll skip the soap box about viewing students as "clients" and interaction with faculty that entails mutual respect and professionalism....). However, I would encourage anyone who is rethinking their career to take advantage of the many services the community college has to offer; career testing, counseling, employment, flex and on-line classes, certification courses, etc. For the money, it has been a value added educational opportunity.
Good Luck, I look forward to reading your posts.
Husband convinced me to join him in our joint business, which I was already heavily invovled in- in order to spend more time together. That time became an abusive nightmare. Sold that business 2yrs ago That extra time for "US" lead to divorce. Assets all tied up, no moeny, start over again, no career- so no pension- STBX being a dick & controlling about finances-not a dime of support offered- so what does a girl do?I did a personal inventory of my skills, what I wanted and what I DID NOT want, but ultimately I had to rely on Me. I started a small gardening business taking care of local estate flower gardens. HUGE SUCCESS.I went to the U. Botanic Garden this past winter and completed my Master Gardeners certification. This summer I have 10 poeple working for me and more work I can ever hope to handle. God is good. Just believe you will succeed, take baby steps where your heart leads, be patient, it WILL come if you do something you LOVE to do, have faith and pray lots
