Career Changes Support Group
This community is dedicated to the difficult challenges of transitioning from one career or job to a new one. Especially as we grow older, it can be very difficult to acquire the skills and relationships and take the financial risk to make the switch.
I left a job after 11 years because a new director took over and brought in his friends from out of state to supervise everyone who had been there forever and they treated us ike crap. I stuck it out for 3 years but crying every day on the way to work began to take its toll. I got a new job 4 miles from home (used to drive 40 minutes each way) and am now in charge of marketing for a fitness organization. I took a $7,000 pay cut but my insurance is paid for and I save on gas. I found out later we don't get raises and the time off changed and it now sucks. I pretty much committed career suicide because the organization is the most dysfuncational place on earth and I didn't figure it out until after I started. The Director is my boss. He talks about employees to me and a few other staff. He sent me an email before xmas complaining about the two insane employees we have in finance and HR. The girl in HR is pregnant and after he complained about them he wrote something like, "I didn't get her pregnant but I'm the one who is suffering." That innapropriate email pushed me over the edge and now I'm looking for a new job. He let the finance lady's daughter work for her, they cut process their own paychecks. HR girl is a biology major and does a few things illegally because she doesn't know the laws. We had a new HR girl come in for about a month and she's told me about all the things the pregnant HR girl is doing illegally. The new HR girl turned in a resignation today. She got her old job back because she can't handle the dysfunction and dealing with a director who lies. Admin staff moved to a building a block away from our main facility a few months ago. We don't have cleaning staff and I'm tired of cleaning the director's pee off of the men's toilet. He's the only guy in the building. I know he's the one who can't hit the toilet. My main problem is the boss is now making me uncomfortable. He asks me to lunch at least once a week and before xmas he asked me to dinner twice before our board meetings. I'm getting divorced because my husband cheated so I'm dealing with that and sadly I don't have kids to use as an excuse to get out of some of these things. I'm 40 and he's 64 and married. I don't think he'd ever do anything but his actions are making me so uncomfortable I'm trying to get a new job as soon as I can. I need advice on how to handle this until I find a new job. He asked me to lunch last week and I said I'm going to have to decline because I'm going to start working out at lunch every day- which is true but also an excuse to get out of lunch. He said he supported me (don't really care if he does or not). Friday he said he'd like to go for coffee every other week so we can work on the strategic plan. Ummm...no. I don't drink coffee and I don't want to be alone with him and his superintendent and probably more staff should also be part of it. He texts me every holiday and says happy whatever holiday it is. He may do it to his assistant but I've asked a few others and he doesn't send them the texts. My birthday is tomorrow and tonight he texted "Happy Birthday." I responded "thanks" so as not to be rude but tried to be as unfriendly as possible. He immediatley texted back, "I wish I could do more for you on your birthday. Happy birthday young lady!". He calls everyone young lady and I hate it! He asked to take me to lunch for my birthday and I said I'm not celebrating this year which is why he said he wishes he could do more. He wanted to go to lunch. What employee wants to go to lunch alone with their boss? Lunch is MY TIME. I want to get away from work and do what I want to do. I don't think he has sexual intentions but it's all creeping me out. I get anxiety about going to work. I fear that I'm going to have to be alone with him in the office since everyone else is part time and never there. I'm going to take my mom's advice and just have a list of excuses prepared to get out of things. I work for a really small company with one part-time HR person who doesn't know the laws. I can't go to her for help although I did tell her what's going on. I thought about going to the board of directors but the president is just as skeezy as my boss and I don't think they'll give a hoot anyway. I texted the new HR girl (she's great at her job) who resigned today and she said I could try talking to him but other staff rececently tried talking to him about another issue last week and he just got mad and sent an email complaining about them to the new HR person. I don't want to work there anymore regardless of whether he is there or not. I think my best bet is to leave but any advice on how to survive until I find a new job would be appreciated. Thanks.
I don't think this type of environment is healthy for anyone. So I agree with you that finding a new job is much better. What you can do is you can avoid discussing non-work related matters by changing the subject. And I don't think this man will have the guts to do anything stupid like saying something to you or touch you inappropriately unless he wants to go to jail and ruin his career and reputation. When lunch time hits just leave the building go enjoy a meal somewhere close away from the people you know? and don't answer phone calls from the office because it's your personal time to recharge. If he is sending you texts don't open them so the status wouldn't turn from "D" to "R" if he wants anything from you work related he should send you an email to your work email account. And you know what ?having a cold face and being serious will make him think twice before trying to say something to you. I guess that's all you need to do. And remember it's only a matter of time untill you leave so stay positive.
