Career Changes Support Group
This community is dedicated to the difficult challenges of transitioning from one career or job to a new one. Especially as we grow older, it can be very difficult to acquire the skills and relationships and take the financial risk to make the switch.
Hi I'm new to the group, and I've got a question. I'm in my mid fifties, and seeking a career change. I have taught most of my adult life. Now that I'm looking for a job outside of the classroom, it's hard. Anyone else out there who has left the classroom and went into a different career path without having to go back to school all over again?

having my own teaching career end in 2001 yes I too had similar situation...I was already in grad school for MA in media communications where I wanted to build skills to sell educational publishing materials/textbooks....but that aint yet happened...but as a teacher I knew I liked driving and had a friend who was driving instructor when I lived on Guam back in 90s so I sought out becoming a driving instructor and got hired by former SEARS Driving schools...I was under their Number 3 man and it is now MO driving school...but I sat and let him talk and talk he did...taught me everything I needed to know to begin my own self employment as driving school...which has gone for almost four years now...I do not earn goo gobs of money but it is all gravy to other sources of income as it is gross profits....my CPA expenses them away at tax time....I had a $12K first year, with no costs other than insurance and things like having signs on van and a right side brake installed....then 2nd year $10K third $8K and this year I am up to over $10K already in Oct....I love doing it...even when student totaled my van I came out of it ok...nobody hurt...no insurance cost raises...and they gave me pay off and $850+ for the van...woot woot....I thought I was upside down on that old van...now I use a 2008 HHR my mom paid cash for me....she wanted me to stay in business for myself...I was going to buy a bomber for $2K or less and go on without the school...
I got the MA and my income has suffered since leaving teaching..so the student loans are differed for long time like 10yrs almost but now in pay off...I started with around fifty k in loans now it is $71K....sucks to be me...but I am much happier than I was of course for years as a classroom special education teacher....
She worked for pain doc too, retired now.
