Hi all!
I am new to this group and have posted a couple comments to some of the posts from others. This is truly an inspiring group of people! While I do not have any burns, I am interested in working with individuals and families of burn survivors. I am currently studying occupational therapy and am looking to have better insight so that I can be a better practitioner.
As someone who has never been seriously injured (with the exception of one nasty mountain biking accident), I feel I can not come close to understanding what burn survivors are going through. All the medical and rehab books are great for learning how to treat wounds and what to expect throughout the healing process, but they do nothing on the real life trials patients go through. Any suggestions/thoughts/complaints/good stories or bad that you are willing to share with me, I would be truly grateful.

I am a mother and my son was recently burned when a gas can exploded. His entire left leg has 3 degree burns and his right hand suffered 2nd and 3rd degree. He was very lucky I think. It could have been way worse. The doctor is great, the pain management people have been wonderful and some of the nurses are ok. My biggest issue would be Physical Therapy people and some of the nurses. They tell my son (12yr old.) that it doesn't hurt. They come in and yank him up in the bed, flip him on his side and shove a pillow under him. All the while he screams in pain and they stand over him sayin "what? what is it?" Really? His burned!!! At times I think to myself I wish they could be burned so they would know what it feels like. I have never been burned but if my son is screaming in pain then don't you think it hurts? He will tell them "please wait, please I need a break to catch my breath, Please!" I know as a parent I am too close to the situation but I think the nurses and PT people need to have a little more compassion. I seriously had a nurse roll her eyes at the fact that my son was screaming as they rolled him roughly about the bed to change his sheets. I have been here 19 days and seen differences in they way certain nurses take care of him. Some take there time and ask questions and let him help in some of his dressing changes. Some act like they are just working for a paycheck and could care less. They just want to get this shift over with so they can do what they want. I've seen some not even come in here and sit out at the desk on there facebook. I guess I'm just suggesting to be a very caring passionate person and listen to your patient. Each one is different and special. My son is not the normal older person that these people are taking care of daily. But he is still a person and needs to be heard. Be kind and treat people how you would want to be treated if you were in this situation or anyone you care about.

I have been getting a lot of 'does it really hurt that bad??'... Yes, yes it does. Also... I am 8 months pregnant and my burns are on my stomach... stop trying to reach and rub the belly that you see has gauze and bandages from end to end.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
