Does your doctor know you're breastfeeding? My OB said absolutely no Mirena until I was finished nursing. You should ask about the mini-pill. Breastfeeding works as a sort of birth control, too. It IS possible to get pregnant while nursing, but with the mini-pill, you should be fine.

I know many mothers who are breastfeeding and using mirena. Much like the mini pill you are getting the same horomone in both. Only real difference is the pill circulates through your blood stream and the iud is more centralized to your uterus.
Estrogen pills can effect your body's ability to produce breastmilk so that is the only thing you you'd want to consider and that you ought to stay away from if at all possible.
I have came across complications post partum and my obgyn and hematologist has deemed the mirena safe while bf'ing but for me the non hormonal iud is best (copper) because ofmy situation.

If you are ever unsure you could bring your concerns up to your dr again or even get a 2nd opinion.

I actually Got the IUD mirena after I had my son 2 months after,,but during those 2 months I was breastfeeding. After getting the mirena I couldnt breast feed anymore because I wasnt producing any...I had it for almost 2 years and the worst experience ever! shortly after I started having back pains, and it gradually got worst over time, migranes was awful, and i never really get them, loosing weight for me was very hard, which was very weird because i was atheletic and active, i just couldnt seem to keep the weight off, lets just say the list went on..So went for check ups couple of times to see whats going on, brought up the possibility that maybe it's the mirena since they couldnt find anything wrong, Long story short, I decided to have it removed after doing reserches on my mine and coming to find out im not the only one out there wh's had this problem, After removing it, I felt so much lighter, no migranes, back pains...all was gone..and it upset me that i didnt know sooner..but glad i got it out when i did....So i wouldnt recommend it, everyone I know whos' gotten it never liked it...and the more and more im doing research on it, the women i come across that had the same problem..so just do your reserch before you decide,
btw...i wasnt told about all the side effects, i was only told about the GOOD things it has to offer..

I did end up getting mirena. It has been in since lo was 6 weeks old. He is now 9 months old. So far I have not had any problems with it. I am proud to say that my lo is still exclusively breastfed. I have had no problems with my milk supply either. Although I was uncertain at the time of getting it. I am glad I did. Thankyou ladies for your advice

I'm on the Depo shot and it hasn't had any effect on my breastmilk. Mirena has a lot of commercials about lawsuits for various complications. I'd discuss Paragard or Depo if you're not good at taking pills.
