Cancer treatment and single kidney

a little over ten years ago, I donated a kidney. I am in the process of being diagnosed for breast cancer. I have learned that Chemo in particular is extremely harsh for kidneys. Has anyone gone through any form of cancer treatment with only one kidney and if so, what measures should be taken to protect my kidney? I've been told to rely on the doctor to monitor my kidney closely during treatments and that is not something I feel comfortable with because once the tests detect a problem, it may be too late...

I agree that your oncologist with your renal specialist should monitor your kidney.
I do not know of any with one kidney an on chemo. Take care.

I have both kidneys but at 66 years old mine are operating at 43% I found out yesterday, from a kidney doctor. He took away alot of meds my Primary Care Physician had prescribed for me. When I do go for Chemo medications will be watched closely. Is all he said. I canstay on my heart meds but antibiotics for one are not good for the kidneys.
I would check with my PCP and make sure the surgeon knows you only have one kidney. He said mine @ 43% is functional, so you should be in better shape than I with one healthy kidney. Only your doctor can make that call for you. Hugs to you.
