Hello Cheri. I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I had the genetic blood test, in fact I had two. One to find out if I had the same gene my father had, because he had breast cancer, as did his mother, her mother, and his father. That came back negative, and then I took an onco-genetic test which determined my "re-occurence rate" in which I fell into the 10 percent category. Both tests were about 4,000.00 each, but completely covered by my insurance. I am on Tamoxifen right now, and have been on it for two weeks. I still haven't experienced any side effects. It may not be working for me, as I hear alot of people complain about Hot Flashes. I go back to the Oncologist in a month to see what I need to do next.
As far as surgery is concerned they will probably give you two options. Lumpectomy or Masectomy. Are you having chemo or radiation, or both? I was a stage 1, so only had 6 weeks of radiation. When you meet with an oncologist he or she will explain everything you need to know. If you haven't found one yet, ask your surgeon for a reference. I hope all works out well for you. Chat anytime.

Im so sorry to hear this, I know it is scary but be positive it will be ok I had the surgery on july 27 for a lump. and they removed it along with the lymph nodes. I was lucky it didnt spread. I had a balloon placed in my breast and the radiation went directly into the area. It wast so bad considering I just got a little sick. It was 2 treatments for 5 days I did decline the chemo it would not have benefited me only 5% which isnt a lot. they took me off the hrt so that contributed to the cancer now Im suffering from hot flashes. but we are working on that now. Just go to the oncologist and he will explain everything. takes notes. I had a friend go with me cause my brain couldnt handle all the information. I will have to start taking the tamix. but I need to have a bone test first Have an open mind wth good thoughts and you will be all right. I think attitude plays a very important rule in all of this.good bless

God bless you too. Stay well! I find so many breast cancer survivors in the real world I can't believe it! I really believe it will be a seriously crappy time and then I will be able to move on with the rest of my life!

If you still have your uteris, you need to look into the risk of uterin cancer while taking tamoxifin.
I decided to have the genetic testing done considering the very strong family history and the fact that I had already had cancer in my mid 30's. It came back positive for brac 1. Not long after, my first mammogram showed a mass in my left breast and I opted to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction. It was a long road, but i feel it was worth it. My risk of breast cancer for a second time went from 87% to less then 10%, I'll take it.

Do you mean DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ)? It's a whole new language when you're first diagnosed, isn't it?

I didn't meet with an oncologist until after I'd had my bilateral mastectomy and the pathology report came back. That way the oncologist had the information needed to come up with a plan of action. If you're not having surgery, I think you can talk to the office where your diagnosis was made to get a referral to an oncologist. If you're having surgery, your surgeon will probably discuss an oncologist with you, if the diagnosis clinic does not.

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in one breast, and another smaller tumor in a lymph node back in January and had a bilateral mastectomy. I've had too many friends die from cancer after having lumpectomies then getting recurrence later on. Surgery recovery was tough but it it was it is. I highly recommend the book "Just Get Me Through This! A Practical Guide to Breast Cancer." It's got great information and suggestions in easy-to-read terms.

I started taking tamoxifen over a month ago and have no side effects that I'm aware of, as of now. My grandmother took tamoxifen for 5 years about 15 years ago and she didn't have any issues from it so I'm hoping for the same.

Well, truly the tamoxifen sucks. I suffer from Hidradenitis, (Open wounds in my groin/labia/tailbone area)And this medicine is not helping the condition at all. I am on Augmentin right now to clear some of this up. Aside from the side effects...so far I have had Nausea, Lack of apetite, Missed Periods, Cough, Joint Pain, Sweating, also had a rash from my chest to my neck and under my arm..this went away in one day. thank God...I will just say "etc". as there are many side effects to this drug, and I am hoping that I don't experience All of them...I wonder what the next 5 years will bring as far as side effects...It's more of a quality of life, thing...with tamoxifen, all I have are aches and pains. Its all scary to me right now. I think that at least they are catching it early and then I'm not sure what they will find when they do the surgery. I am having a lumpectomy in a week from Wednesday. They will be removing the original mass that they found in the biopsy which was DCIS grade 3 with necrosis and absence of invasion. There is another mass, less than a centimeter, that they will remove also (found in an ultrasound). The surgeon is going to check it after it is removed and also check my lymph nodes in surgery to make sure there was no invasion. Until all is done and said I'm on pins and needles! I know he plans on radiation and probably tamoxifen. Respectful! Do you think you may have an allergy to it? You side effects sound intolerable! I hope you can find some relief and resolve soon!!
