Nothing could have saved us. At all.
If I could have done something different, I would have tried harder in different ways than what I was doing to try to make the marriage work. I don't think I really knew what I needed and wasn't able to fully articulate it to my ex (hindsight is so much clearer). I know full well now, but too much water has passed under the bridge and he and I have developed too many dysfunctional patterns that we could not break. Plus there are things of which he and I are both stubborn and unwilling to give up for the other person.
If I could go back and change something I would have stood up for myself more, but I think that still would have led to my divorce. A person can only go without for so long before they want to leave.
so... guess, long story short. I would not have married her either.
I will no longer ever doubt myself again.
It's going to be tough to watch them navigate through the pain themselves. They did not deserve any of this. It's a tough lesson in life. I hope they, and all the children of divorce, take a little morsel of this and treat their significant others with respect and dignity. If they can do that, all this was worth it.
