Sometimes, some peoples lives are so mundane, boring and unsatisfying that they feel that lying gives them some substance and possibly some much desired attention. A few white lies i believe can be okay, at least i wouldn't get hung up on them, but what your ex was lying about is a little beyond 'white' and sounds like some severe ass attention grabbing... It appears that he has some other bigger issues going on somewhere! Anyway, at least he's an ex now, just file it under 'crazy ass liar relationship' and move on! Good luck.

Yes! My ex is a pathological liar! Now, he's never gone to the extreme of faking cancer but he still could never tell the truth. One night he disappeared. It was around midnight that I noticed he was gone. The car was still in the driveway but he was gone-not in the house, not in the garage, not on the property. I started calling his phone. I called every 2 minutes for an hour. Finally, he walked in the door. He told me that he had gone for a walk and never heard his phone ringing. Okay, now this is a man with chronic knee problems who wouldn't ever take the dog for a walk with me because of his knee problems, it was midnight, who the hell just goes for a walk at midnight? And it was only 30 degrees outside. Where was he actually? The ow had drove by and picked him up and they took off together.
Another lie..he was working 3rd shift one night but by 9am, he still hadn't come home. I kept calling and calling him. By 11am, he called me to say he had fallen asleep at work......yeah, right.
And the biggest lie he ever told me......"I love you."

I don't know what a pathological liar is. My ex is a regular liar who lies all the time about anything and everything. Whether he needs to or not.

let them deal with themselves---focus on yourself...know its not easy..stop dwelling on stuff that no longer serves you....be thankful...give yourself the most easiest acceptable answer that allows you to move on.....plain and simple "fuck him or her" move on...be thankful youve been relieved or dealing/caring for them...not your responsibility anymore...the past is done and youre wastingprecious energy on a negative of your past life....you dont have to cure cancer(although that would be super awesome)..just concern yourself with yourself

my X was the most pathological liar ive known. he lied to me every day for 20 yearss.

My ex is a big time pathological liar, as well as his family too. A lot of cover-ups and manipulations learned along the way in that family. Mine lies to everyone too. He tells everyone he meets that he is retired (he's 47) from a City job. He was actually fired from 15 years ago. He is really receiving social security disability for being bi-polar. He even lied to the doctor about his supposed bi-polar behavior. He used his friend's behavior and situation as if they were his own and fooled the system. He lies about his age, his childhood - to get sympathy, you name it, it's a lie. I was always frustrated too. It is a sickness. Now he's with OW and throwing it on thick. It makes me sick. I just wanna blow the whistle on him. I am totally honest and don't work that way! I totally understand what you are saying.

Mine wasn't pathological, just a plain old liar. The worst kind of liar, the one that lied about big or little things. Anything at all. His whole past was a lie he told me. The stupid thing is that I suspected from a very early time that he was lying but I felt sorry for him (embarrassed for him) so I never did anything about it.
