So my story is really complicated... My husband and I have been together for 8 years, married for 3. We have a 2 year old son, we just bought a house, we just got a puppy, and then my husband left me. We began having problems around a year ago when I went through a severe depression. I became despondent, angry, sad, and hopeless. I took it out on my husband, and I had no idea I was doing it. My husband didn't recognize my depression as he was always working. I felt alone, and I hated myself. I withdrew from him both physically and emotionally. I gained a lot of weight, going from being around 170lbs to 270lbs. I felt disgusting and considered suicide multiple times. The only thing that kept me from doing the unthinkable was my love for my husband and my son. During my depression, I let negativity influence my life. I became critical of my husband and I became critical of his mother. I would tell him every thought that popped into my head about the things she said and did. I admit that I was disrespectful towards him regarding his mother, but I was never disrespectful to her. I told him that I felt like she used him and that he was the low man on the totem pole when it came to his siblings. He was the one who was always crapped on. At the time, I really felt that was true, but in hindsight, I know that it wasn't fair of me to compare his mother's love for him to her love for his siblings. Throughout our relationship, we spent a lot more time with my familty than with my husband's. My mother convinced me that this was normal. We moved back to our hometown to be closer to both of our families. We lived with my parents for 7 months, and that really took a toll on our already struggling marriage and my depression. My mother, however, recognized that something was off and told me she thought I needed to talk to someone about my depression. By the time I talked to a counselor, my husband had already withdrawn from me and began a close friendship with a female coworker. I didn't trust this woman from the start, but my husband convinced me that because she was married and pregnant with her second child, there was nothing to worry about. I couldn't control my jealousy about her though, and it led to many arguments. In December, my mother-in-law died unexpectedly. My husband was destroyed by this, as was I. I loved my mother-in-law, even though I complained about her. He pulled away from me even more, and I noticed that he was in his phone almost constantly. I pulled the phone bill and realized that he had been talking to her a lot more than he led me to believe. He hid the true nature of his friendship. As time went on, things progressively got worse between us. I didn't know how to deal with him grieving, so I just gave him his space because he told me that's what he wanted. His space, however, was filled with conversations with his "friend". In March, things finally came to a head, and he told me he was tired of my jealousy and controlling behavior. He told me we needed space from each other, and he left. Since then, he told me he wants a divorce, but he hasn't filed yet. It's been a month since he told me he wanted a divorce and 7 weeks since he left. He almost immediately began to talk to his newly separated "friend" all day everyday. It's convenient that they're both separated now, right? But he insists that nothing was going on... Anyway, my husband has expressed a lot of resentment towards me for the way I behaved during my depression and for the things I said about his mom. He told his brother and sister that I'm crazy and that I talked crap about their mother. His sister and I are very close, so she already knew about everything. I told her from the start because I wanted to be open and honest about all of our problems. I don't want to lose the respect of his family. I love them dearly, and I love my husband. I have in the back of my mind still some hope that if my husband could just forgive me and let go of his resentment, that our marriage could be good again. I sought treatment for my depression and I recognize how I pushed him away. I see my faults and the error in my ways, I just wish that he could see things with fresh eyes instead of with these negativity glasses he's wearing. I want him to see that this woman he's entertaining is not a good person... She left her 2 kids! One of them she sent to live with her sister, and I'm not entirely sure where her newborn is in all of this. She is a self absorbed person, and she posts passive aggressive posts all over Facebook about me and about her and my husband. Nowhere does she post about her children or anything positive. Am I absolutely nuts for hoping for a reconciliation? I need help. I don't know how to accept all of this because I feel like it's extremely unfair, and he never gave me a chance to get better. Thanks!
Do you have a local church family and/or Pastor you can talk to? Do you belong to a local support group where you can brain storm and learn from others as well?
The fact that you are reaching out indicates that you are strong enough to put it out there and that you are willing to work on it. I have found that writing in a journal all of my thoughts, feelings, goals, pros and cons, etc. helped me to work through it. Then I was able to use it as a gauge to see how far I have come.
Have you asked your husband if he is willing to go to couple's counseling? Have you stepped back and evaluated what is best for you and your son? You have made it this far and you will get to a place where you will be able to make the right decisions when it is time to move forward. Keep seeking wise counsel as you travel this journey.
