Hi, I am new to this site and have never reached out on a online support group before now.  I have just uncovered that I was engaged to a malignant sociopath for over a year together for 3 yrs.  I am still searching for ways to move past all of this horror and find closure to move on.  If anyone has experienced anything like this I would welcome your input.  Thank you very much.

What kinds of experiences have you had? I have a post where I shared my experiences and ppl were better able to understand where they could identify and offer help. Overall, it’s good that you’ve reached a decision about your life and chosen to make a change. It’s the first step.

I was also in a relationship with a diagnosed sociopath. Another group on DS that you might look into is called “Survivors of Sociopaths”. It is a small group, but their experiences might resonate with you and help you better understand what you went through. After ending a relationship with someone like that, memories will come flooding back and possibly make you feel overwhelmed or “crazy”. Hopefully, joining that group might help you make sense of it.

Anameta thank you for responding. There are so many experiences it would be pages and pages of information. I’m just learning really over the last month and a half what I was dealing with. I had no idea. I thought I was dealing with somebody with bipolar disorder and come to find out it wasn’t that at all.

Thank you for responding as well. I did look for a group that dealt with survivors of Sociopaths but didn’t see it available so that’s why I chose this group but you’re right I need to be over in that group where I could possibly be of help to someone that can relate or visa versa so thank you for directing me that way.

Hey, so sorry that you had to go thru all that but just recognizing what you were in and getting out is a great big step forward. Have you considered any counseling? Living in the middle of all that you did can warp your way of thinking and responding in life. You want to move on but in a healthy mental and emotional way. Do you belong to a church? Usually the pastor can give some good insight and perspective. There are also many support groups out there too. Now is the time to take care of yourself and heal from such a devastating few years. Seek some professional help if you can. There is a reason you picked and stayed with a sociopath. I wish you all the best!
