Well just got off the phone with my stbx and she wanted us to wait and tell the kids over a different weekend then today. She felt telling them on their last weeked before school starts back up would be difficult for them upon returning to school. She did not want them to go back to school after a 2 week break and people ask how did your xmas/winter break go and the main thing they get from it was their parents tell them they are divorcing. Thoughts?

I agree with this. I think it will be difficult whenever you guys do tell them but giving it a little distance from the Holidays and the vacation is a grand idea. I am so sorry your family is going through this and I wish you the best in moving past this time and into a brighter future that will come.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Telling the children can be hard, but I'm also here to tell you, it might not be bad at all.

I was so nervous to break the news to my children. My ex avoids confrontation at all costs and just left me to handle breaking the news all on my own. I sat the kids down and explained to it to them. I waited for the crying to start, but it didn't. My older son just looked at me and said "I suspected it was coming". My daughter (6 at the time) asked what divorce was and then went to her room to play. I don't know how your children will react and maybe I am raising emotional robots, but I wanted you to know that there is a chance that it might not be as bad as you think. Best of luck to you.

I think my daughter will not be totally surprised. She has asked in the past why mommy and I dont seem to hug or kiss. Really worried about my son. He can be a bit emotional.

Remember that your stbx has been trying to delay this as much as possible, and that there will not ever be a good time to do this. If you think it's best to wait, then you know best, but try not to find excuses to not tell them - it just means your anxiety over getting it over with will last longer.

Very true Sara. I appreciate your feedback. I know their will never be a good time to tell them. Right now we are going to do it on January 17th. My daughter has a gymnastics meet next weeked so she does not want to get her down before she competes. It will not go past Jan 17th.

Well...we told our kids today. My stbx wanted to do it yesterday but she conveniently wasn't around and then it got too late. I told her this morning that I'm telling them this morning after homework was done. It went as well as could be expected. It was tough like pulling a Band-Aid...well...worse actually. It was very surreal. I had to speak since my stbx is a horrible communicator. While I was explaining everything my daughter got very emotional so my stbx went over to give her a hug and touch my son's shoulders. That was nice but on the other hand I was thinking to myself..."you f'ing b$*ch, I'm stuck giving the bad news while you give the comfort. You're the one that wants this. You're the one that cheated." Oh well, if it helped my kids then I guess it's OK. We all got through it. Now we try to make everything work. New schedule starts on Monday.

We couldn't wait until next weekend because my stbx was pretty adamant that she wanted to start in her apartment. So like some of the posts say...there is never a good time for this. Glad it is over with though. I've been dreading this day for about 6 months.

There will never be a good time. It will only get hard the more time goes on. If she keeps pushing it back then I think you will just have to do this on your own. Trust us there will never be a good time. There will always be a reason not to tell them. I hope you dont let her control the situation She is trying to control when and where then it will only get worse. I dont know really how your kids will react but if you think you need help go to a family therapist. But just delaying will only bring more pain for you. You can do this even if your STBX is not there. Stay strong and you can do. Is your STBX living at the house or has she moved out?
