They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. This time of year is a rough time for many people. With the on-set of the holidays fast approaching and other things moving at a whirl wind pace, it is easy to miss a friend who is getting down in their spirits.
Because of what I do for a living, I tend to see these things a bit more. Suicides seem to skyrocket this time of year.There is noting more tragic than working a suicide on Christmas Day (I have done this before).
Look out for your friends and family this time of year. If someone seems to be down try to bring them up. If someone is displaying suicidal signs, or you think that they are, get them help immediately.
For those of you that are suicidal yourselves, I am sending out a plea for you to get help immediately. Please don't do it. It may seem like an easy way out or the only way out but consider your family, friends, and the people who deal with the aftermath.
I have worked quite a few suicides and death investigations in 11 years of my profession. I can describe in detail how the people looked, how the scene was, the smells, the sounds, and excruciating details about the incidents. I will not forget these faces and I will admit that it bothers me, a lot at times. This goes for the EMS workers as well when they come on scene and have to deal with it and the people left cleaning up the body fluids and other stuff that can be left over. None of us like seeing this and it takes a heavy tole on us. Suicide is not a way out and it hurts so many other people.
Happy Holidays people and remember, it is our job to help each other out and when one of us is down, the rest of us can pick them up!

This is a positive tool for a sad potential...
That REALLY pisses me off.
Had a meet-up with some great people from the surrounding area this weekend, and every one was drinking, but smart about it.
Drunk Drivers take their tole and create horrible human tragities too.
I could tell you of a few really sad stories about drunk drivers. I will impart that knowledge that one of the guys I went through the VA State Police Academy with was killed, along with his young son, some years ago when he was driving to Wal-mart late one night to pick up a Harry Potter book that was being released. The book was a present for his son. On the way to Wal-mart both him and his son were killed by a drunk driver :(
Speaking from experience, it is NOT worth it to drink and drive.
We all make mistakes. A lot of police officers have no compassion for the people that they arrest because they tend to view them as criminals. I don't see it that way because most of the time I am arresting good people who made a simple mistake. I try to treat them with the utmost respect and walk them through the process as gently as I can because it is very tramatic to be arrested.
It is easy to fall into that trap. Nova spoke about the reaction of meds and alcohol. I have seen people who have been arrested for DUID (Driving under the influence of Drugs) and it is the same thing as DUI. You can also get a Drunk In Public in Virginia with only having drugs that impair you in your system (if you appear intoxicated then you can be arrested). It only takes about two drinks for the average person to his the presumptive limit of 0.08 grams per 210 liters of breath.
Be careful out there, and if you see someone that shouldn't drive, say something. You could save their lives or save them the pain of getting a DUI!

They told me they could tell that this holiday season was getting me down, and that every week I seemed a bit sadder as time went on..
They were spot on..Spending Christmas without family has me down, so much so that I am so tempted to have my son open his gifts on Christmas eve and then I would be able to stay in bed on Christmas day..
No thoughts of suicide, just very sad..
