Since I am in a story telling mood, here is the worst thing that I have ever been a part of. If you are sensitive, don't read any further!
I had been dispatched to a call of shots fired. It was a descent fall day last year. I arrived in the area and the shot has supposedly come from a back yard in the area.
I entered the back yard and started to look around. Near a wood shed I saw a man sitting on a tree stump. I was coming from his left side and I couldn't see his right side. The guy looked over, saw me and the guy I was with, took a deep breath and BOOM.
This red mist was in the air and I watched him lean back agains the wood shed. I ran forward to him and watched as his eyes rolled in the back of his head. There was a small hole in his right temple where blood was coming out of, slowly. He started to do this shallow breathing thing, taking gasping breaths.
We called for a rescue squad and they go there. The guy was still doing those shallow little breaths. They loaded him up but it was too late. Those short breaths were death throws and he died as they loaded him up.
I will never forget that day. After that I had to do a death notification to the man's wife. I told her what had happened and she told me that he had just finished all the yard work, straightened up their room, had a nice lunch with her, told her that he loved her, and then walked outside and that was the last she saw of him.
Apparently the man was suffering from terminal cancer and he was in a lot of pain. It still affected all of us who were on the scene and I seldom talk about this.
I never told my ex about this because she wouldn't understand. I just dealt with it by myself that evening when I got home.

things like this are exactly why I don't think death with dignity is such a bad idea.
The worst thing I ever saw was a newborn patient I had who was a victim of child abuse. He was only a few weeks old. His father had taken a cigarette and burned his little body so badly he had little circles of oozing and necrotic tissue over the majority of his skin...even on his little penis.
It was sickening.
THat would be horrible to see a baby go through that. I saw a 13 year old boy who hung himself. That was a bad one too. I watched them do CPR on the boy. Blood was coming out his mouth while they were doing this. It was a horrible scene too.
Craziest stuff Ive seen? Too many. I grew up in a neighborhood known as "Crow Village". Sheriffs went in there because back in the 70's cops got shot and killed and refused to drive in there. Saw a guy get stabbed to death across the street when I was 7. Their were 4 of them and ran the guy down to the front of a garage from down the street. Pretty screwed up to see the guy begging and screaming with his hands up as the first knife stuck to the side of his neck and continued. They walked away as if nothing was up. Seen a head come off in a mototrcycle accident of the freeway. So yeah, pretty crazy stuff. One night I got a call from my guards watching a 500 acre cement plant saying their was a dead naked body in the rock quarry. Sure enough, I phoned the sheriffs dept. and advised them. I never did get the whole story, but the man was off his meds, got naked and hopped over the fence. After a while, youre just grateful its not you. But it does get to you. Unfortunately one of our events is all over youtube that gets a lot of hits all the time. Glad my staff can barely be seen. Crazy crazy crazy.
I hate the teen suicides(too many to count here).
The worst case I had to work on to date was a 72 year old woman who was stabbed and they didn't find her for 3 days...then she spent another 3-4 days being autopsied before she was imbalmed.She was so deteriated and smelled so bad(unrecognizable)...all of us at the funeral home were having a hard time keeping our lunch down.
I also did a young woman who was an avid sky diver.He shute got tangled around another sky divers shute and plumeted to her death right in front of her fiance....sick
